Overview
The National Transportation Atlas Databases 2004 (NTAD2004) is a set of nationwide geographic databases developed by the U.S. Dept. of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics and other Federal agencies which depict transportation facilities, transportation networks, and associated infrastructure. These datasets include spatial information for transportation modal networks and intermodal terminals, as well as the related attribute information for these features. Metadata documentation, as prescribed by the Federal Geographic Data Committee, is also provided for each database.
These data layers support research, analysis, and decisionmaking across all modes of transportation. They are most useful at the national level, but have major applications at regional, state, and local scales throughout the transportation community. Most data is at a scale of 1:100,000.
These databases do not provide explicit connections between modal networks and terminals. BTS plans to enhance future releases to provide intermodal connectivity, additional attributes, and passenger and commodity flow information.
Getting NTAD Data
The NTAD Layers are available in shapefile format by FTP or mapped network drive from the Libraries Geodata Server.

Documentation files are also on the Geodata Server at ftp://gisdata.lib.ncsu.edu/fedgov/bts/ntad04/docs/.
The NTAD data can be downloaded directly from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics Mapping Center.
