Overview
From the U.S. Census Bureau's 2000 Product Profile: LandView 5 -- "LandView® reflects the collaborative efforts of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to provide the public readily accessible published federal spatial and demographic data. It is composed of two software programs: the LandView® database manager and the MARPLOT® map viewer. These two programs work in tandem to create a simple computer mapping system that displays individual map layers and the demographic and spatial information associated with them. A Viewer for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Census Bureau, and the U.S.
Geological Survey Data and Maps.
"LandView Capabilities:
- Browse and query records from the following: Environmental Protection Agency's Envirofacts Warehouse, the U.S Census Bureau's Census 2000 Demographic Profiles, and the USGS Geographic Names Information System.
- Locate query results on a map.
- Calculate Census 2000 population and housing unit counts within a user-specified radius.
- Export data using popular database formats.
- Locate a street address range on the map.
- Create thematic maps displaying census data.
"MARPLOT Capabilities:
- Create customized digital maps by selecting individual map layers.
- View EPA regulated sites and USGS names for features and places.
- Map detailed road data (over 6.3 million miles), rivers, and railroads based on the U.S. Census Bureau's Tiger/Line files.
- Map Census 2000 Legal and statistical entities, including urban areas.
- Select and display sites based on feature location within a user-defined
radius.
- Identify geographic entities such as state, county, census tract, and block group on the
map view using the MARPLOT map pointer tool."

LandView 5 Data Contents
NOTE - Data in MARPLOT format is not readily exportable into other mapping software. Shapefiles can be imported into MARPLOT, however (see "Importing...").
- Census Bureau data:
- Census 2000 demographic data.
- Historical population and housing unit counts for states and counties.
- MARPLOT Census demographic layer grouping- represents the generalized and detailed boundary files used to display Census 2000 statistical and legal entities.
- MARPLOT Census 2000 TIGER/Line layers grouping- Census 2000 TIGER/Line data used to display roads, railroads, shoreline, water and other features.
- EPA data (Extracted from the Envirofacts Data Warehouse on June 2000):
- AIRS/AFS (air emmision facilities)
- RCRAInfo (hazardous waste handlers)
- CERCLIS (Superfund sites)
- TRI (Toxic Release Inventory)
- PCS- Permit Compliance System (water discharge permits)
- USGS data:
- Geographic Names Information System (GNIS)
- Selected Federal Lands from the USGS National Atlas
Getting LandView 5
LandView 5 is available on two DVD disks (East/West) in the D.H. Hill Library Reference Desk CD-ROM cabinet under call number C 3.301:L 23/2.
LandView 5 is installed on the GIS workstation in the DH Hill Library reference area, and the GIS workstation in the Digital Media Lab. The DVDs are required to run LandView 5.
