Abstract:
SRTM Void Areas (North East, one of six data sets) represents those areas without elevation values within the SRTM coverage area (between 60 degrees North and 56 degrees South latitude) of the world. These void areas are a result of radar shadow, layover, and other effects of terrain, as well as technical radar interferometry phase unwrapping issues. These void areas also represent those areas where ESRI calculated an elevation value. The vast majority of voids were filled using a Delta Surface Fill (DSF) method utilizing the SRTM and GTOPO30. Any remaining voids were interpolated using the elevation values from the DSF method.
Purpose:
SRTM Void Areas provides data quality information about the source and accuracy of the elevation values.

SRTM1 DTEDr are the finished DTED Level 1 (3-arc second or nominal 90-meter post spacing) derived by thinning the SRTM2 DTED to the larger horizontal post spacing. Spikes and wells over 100 meters have been eliminated. Small voids, 16 contiguous posts or less in extent, have been filled by interpolation. Larger voids remain in the data.

In addition to voids due to shadows and layover and poor reflective properties of the Earth's surface, there are occasional floating islands of data, unregistered vertically, due to phase unwrapping errors.

Process_Description:
The following steps were performed by ESRI: Using ArcGISr Spatial Analyst generated a NoData ESRI Grid for each SRTM DTED cell. Mosaicked all SRTM NoData ESRI Grids into a single ArcSDE raster dataset. Extracted pixel values equal to 1 (NoData) from the ArcSDE raster dataset to create six separate ESRI Grids that cover the SRTM data capture area. Converted the six NoData ESRI Grids from raster to polygon shapefiles. Added a one-degree square polygon (that was densified) to the North Central NoData shapefile that represents the land area in northern Africa where there is no SRTM data coverage. Added and calculated the attributes SQMI and SQKM to each polygon shapefile. Converted the six NoData polygon shapefiles to Smart Data Compression (SDC) format. Created ArcGISr layer files (.lyr), projection files (.prj), and spatial indices.
