The shapefile is converted to SDC (Smart Data Compression) format using either ESRI SDC Data Development Kit Professional 2 (DDKP2) or tools in ArcGIS. The SDC data set is then loaded into ArcSDE® to verify and validate the geometry.
After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
The geospatial part of this data set was calculated from latitude/longitude coordinates from the U.S. Census Bureau 2000 Summary File 1 (SF1). The horizontal positional accuracy is unknown.
Attribute and geospatial data
The following steps were performed by ESRI for Data & Maps 2002: Created a data set by extracting populated places from U.S. Census Bureau 2000 Summary File 1 (SF1). Ran ArcView GIS command Add Event Theme on the data set to create the point location centroids shapefile. Reformatted attributes and finalized attribute order. Created ArcGIS® layer file (.lyr), projection file (.prj), and spatial indices. Converted the data set to SDC.
The following steps were performed by ESRI: Changed CLASS = 'CDP' to CLASS = 'Census Designated Place'. Made CLASS attribute title case.
The following steps were performed by ESRI: Renamed attributes AREANAME to NAME, POPULATION to POP2000, and POP_CL to POP_CLASS. Reduced the attribute widths for NAME and CLASS. Changed the CLASS attribute value "CDP" to "Census Designated Place".
