The shapefile is converted to SDC (Smart Data Compression) format using either ESRI SDC Data Development Kit Professional 2 (DDKP2) or tools in ArcGIS. The SDC data set is then loaded into ArcSDE® to verify and validate the geometry.
If a hospital did not respond to the survey, the information was obtained from previously reported data. After processing, the data set is checked for drawing display and number of records and file sizes compared with source materials.
Attribute and geospatial data
Attribute and geospatial data
The following steps were performed by ESRI: Received an Excel file from Health Forum, L.L.C. Converted the file to dBASE (.dbf) and named the attributes. Removed features not in the fifty United States or District of Columbia. Used Centrus Desktop to geocode the file using the address information included. Created a point shapefile from merging: 1) the 5484 locations from geocoding that matched to a street address, and 2) the 524 locations from the latitude/longitude values included in the Excel file when the address could only be geocoded using the ZIP Code value. Added description values for ADMIN_DESC and TYPE_DESC attributes using the American Hospital Association Annual Survey Database documentation. Converted the data set to SDC. Created ArcGIS® layer file (.lyr), projection file (.prj), and spatial indices.

The Health Service Area (HSA) code. Local health care markets for community-based inpatient care derived by researchers at Dartmouth Medical School for the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care from a national patient origin study. Each HSA is a cluster of contiguous Zip Codes, the residents of which predominantly use one or more hospitals within the HSA. 3,436 discrete HSAs have been defined.

The Health Referral Region (HRR) code. Regional health care markets for tertiary medical care. Hospital referral regions were defined in the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care by documenting where residents of hospital service areas received major cardiovascular surgical procedures and neurosurgery. Using these two services as markers for tertiary care, the 3,436 hospital service areas were aggregated into 306 hospital referral regions.
