World Shaded Relief represents a shaded relief map for the world derived from the global digital elevation model (DEM) - GTOPO30 data sets from the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (EDC DAAC). The data has been resampled.

GTOPO30 is a global digital elevation model (DEM) with a horizontal grid spacing of 30 arc seconds (approximately 1 kilometer). GTOPO30 was derived from several raster and vector sources of topographic information. Detailed information on the characteristics of GTOPO30 including the data distribution format, the data sources, production methods, accuracy, and hints for users, is found in the GTOPO30 README file (<http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/README.html>).

GTOPO30, completed in late 1996, was developed over a three-year period through a collaborative effort led by staff at the U.S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center (EDC). The following organizations participated by contributing funding or source data: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the United Nations Environment Programme/Global Resource Information Database (UNEP/GRID), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica Geografica e Informatica (INEGI) of Mexico, the Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) of Japan, Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research of New Zealand, and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR).

The following steps were performed by ESRI for Data & Maps 2002: Beginning with the data as an ArcInfo™ grid, converted it to TIFF format and clipped the TIFF to 90 degrees by 180 degrees. Resampled the data. Ran the ArcGIS® Spatial Analyst Hillshade function on the elevation data to create the shaded relief map with the angle of illumination 315 degrees in azimuth (from the northwest) and 45 degrees above the surface. Converted to MrSID image format.

The following steps were performed by ESRI: Downloaded each tile of the data from <http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/gtopo30.html>, extracted each, and assembled all into a global data set. Resampled the data. Ran the ArcGIS® Spatial Analyst Hillshade function on the elevation data to create the shaded relief map with the angle of illumination 315 degrees in azimuth (from the northwest) and 45 degrees above the surface. Converted to MrSID image format.
