Community 2020 (HUD)

Overview
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community 2020 v. 2.0 software is a community planning software package that provides citizens, community-based organizations, state and local governments, housing authorities, and non-governmental organizations with a means to access HUD program information. The software is built on Caliper's Maptitude GIS software and incorporates a wide range of demographic variables, estimates and projections.

The book "Mapping your community : using geographic information to strengthen community initiatives" is a guide to applied use of the Community 2020 system. It is available in the library stacks under call number: HD7293 .M32 1997
Data Included
Please note that this data is in Maptitude format and cannot be exported as shapefiles, though shapefiles and data in some other formats can be imported into Maptitude. The commercial data is provided for use with this software on a single workstation only.
The following data is included with the software:
- Geographic data include street-level geography, states, counties, Congressional districts, cities, and ZIP codes, plus other cartographic data sets
- Census data include over 600 variables from the 1990 Census for all levels of census geography from states to block groups
- Demographic estimates for 1997
- Demographic projections for 2002 and 2007
- HUD program data describe community planning entitlement projects and competitive projects, Empowerment Zones & Enterprise Communities (EZ/EC) activities, public housing developments, FHA single- and multi-family housing, and more. Individual program data sets are provided for one or more years from 1992 to present.
Workstation Access
The Community 2020 data CD-ROM's reside in the GIS Cabinet and can be obtained for use by inquiring at the reference desk. The Community 2020 software is not compatible with Windows 2000 Operating System, which is used in DH Hill Library. Contact the Data Services Librarian if you need to use Community 2020.
