The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission in cooperation with the N.C. Center for Geographic Information and Analysis developed the WRC DPMTW digital data to enhance planning and management of trout streams. The GIS data set depicts the trout regulations in effect on trout streams managed under the DPMTW program as listed in the 1997-98 North Carolina Inland Fishing, Hunting & Trapping Regulations Digest (Effective July 1, 1997 to June 30, 1998). This file enables the user to identify the regulations in effect through a color coding system that reflects the foreground color of signs posted along the streams. The file also reveals whether or not the streams are located on public lands (game lands). Publically accessible lands data were derived from Federal lands files, North Carolina game lands files, and data digitized from private ownership maps. Plans are to update these maps as changes occur. These maps are provided as a guide to trout waters and users should refer to the current Regulations Digest to confirm regulations in effect.
This data layer was created to map existing waters managed under the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission's Designated Public Mountain Trout Waters program for management and public information purposes. Output files were used to print an agency publication entitled "North Carolina Trout Fishing Maps". This publication went on sale to the public in 1997.

The NC WRC delineated the public game lands on mylar overlays mapped at 1:100,000 scale. NC CGIA digitized these areas and attributed them with WRC designated trout waters classification. Attributes were were checked by WRC staff. Linework, DLG code - NCCGIA.
Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the dataset was built for arc and polygon topology using the "build" command. The data set was then cleaned with a fuzzy tolerance of 1 foot. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
These data represent all designated trout waters managed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and as listed in the North Carolina Inland Fishing, Hunting & Trapping Regulation Digest for July 1, 1997 to June 30, 1998
Hydrography 1:100,000-scale features were taken from the USGS 1:100,000-scale DLGs. Supplemented hydrographic features were digitized from 1:24,000-scale bases and the linework checked against the bases to within a linewidth.
Location of Trout Waters
Locations of surface waters consisting of streams and rivers, lakes, ponds, and shorelines combined from both 1:24,000 and 1:100,000-scale sources
1) 1:100,000-scale hydrography Digital Line Graph Files where clipped out by county boundary using Arc/Info. 2) United States Forest Service surface ownership polygon coverage and NC CGIA WRC Gamelands polygon coverage were merged with the 1:100,000-scale hydrography Digital Line Graph Files for each county. The intersection of the polygons with the hydrography creates a node that delineates sections of streams that are regulated by the WRC. 3) Using the Designated Public Mountain Trout Water section of the 1997 -1998 Regulation Digest, reaches of regulated streams and lakes where coded appropriately for each county. 4) Check plots where created for each county showing location and designation of each regulated stream. The plots where then reviewed by WRC for accuracy. 5) The reviewed and corrected maps where then printed by WRC in the North Carolina Fishing Maps atlas. 6) The twenty five counties where edgematched and appended together to create one single Arc/Info coverage.

Wildlife Resources Commission Designation of Public Mountain Trout Waters
WRC
Water that is stocked periodically with trout in order fishing. There is no size limit or bait restriction and the creel is seven trout per day. Water is marked with a green and white sign and posted conspicuously along watercourse.
WRC
Water that may be fished only with artificial lures with one single hook, no natural bait may be possessed while fishing between March 1, and one half hour after sunset on May 31. This water is closed to fishing between one-half hour after sunset on May 31 and 6:00 am on June 1. At 6:00 am on June 1 this water is open to fishing under Hatchery Supported regulations. This water is marked with a black and white sign.
WRC
High quality water which sustains trout populations by natural reproduction. In wild trout water the minimum length limit is 7 inches ane the creel limit is 4 trout per day. Only artificial lures with one single hook may be used. Water is marked with a blue and white sign.
WRC
A stream that may be fished with artificial lures or natural bait, except live fish. Lures and natural baits are restricted to one single hook. The minimum length limit is 7 inches and the creel limit is 4 trout per day. This stream is marked with a brown and white signs.
WRC
A stream that may be fished with artificial lures having one single hook and all fish must be released. No fish may be harvested or possessed while fishing this stream. This stream is marked with a purple and gold sign.
WRC
A stream that may be fished with artificial flies having one single hook and all fish must be released. No fish may be harvested or possessed while fishing this stream. This stream is marked with a red and gold sign.
WRC
Water that is not designated by the WRC.
