The NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis developed the GIS data set, County Boundaries, as mapped by the US Geological Survey-Digital Line Graph Program to facilitate planning, siting and impact analysis in the 100 individual counties of North Carolina. This file enables the user to make various county-level determinations when used in conjunction with other data layers. This coverage does not include the shoreline but contains straight-lined boundaries of all of North Carolina's Counties. Another coverage exists which does include the shoreline.
This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

NC CGIA digitized the county boundaries from USGS Digital Line Graphs on mylar basemaps. The polygons were attributed with county name, county FIPS number, county abbreviation, and total acres per county. Arcs were assigned an arc type and name. The digital files were plotted and overlayed to the originals and linework and label corrections were made.
Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the data set was built for arc and polygon topology using the "build" command. The data set was then cleaned with a fuzzy tolerance of (1 foot.) Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
This data layer represents the jurisdictional boundaries of all counties in North Carolina, as mapped by the US Geological Survey-Digital Line Graph Program, 1:100,000-scale. The shoreline is not delineated in this file, only the shell of the state.
County boundaries were digitized from 30 x 60 Series USGS mylar basemaps, which meet National Map Accuracy Standards. The digital files were plotted and overlayed to the originals and needed line corrections were made to within one linewidth.

The file was created using ESRI's ARC/INFO version 5.0 GIS using a Calcomp digitizer and ARCEDIT. County boundaries without shoreline were digitized from hand delineated county boundaries on USGS 30 x 60 Series mylar basemaps. The digital files were attributed and checkplots were created for review by NC CGIA GIS analyst. Necessary corrections were made and new plots were run. Post processing involved edgematching and mapjoining of USGS 30 x 60 Series maps used to create the digitized data. This process generated one statewide polygon coverage showing the extent of county boundaries for NC.

An arc and polygon coverage depicting the North Carolina state and county boundaries without shoreline. The polygon attribute table (PAT) has attribute data including total area in coverage units(square meters), total perimeter (linear meters), polygon internal identification number, polygon user identification number, a FIPS numeric code indicating county identification, county name, county abbreviation, and total number of acres per county. The arc attribute table (AAT) includes unique numeric ids as well as arc type and arc name. >CB100.PAT Polygon Attribute Table >COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE DEC DESCRIPTION > 1 AREA 4 12 F 3 Total area in meters > 5 PERIMETER 4 12 F 3 Total perimeter in meters > 9 CB100# 4 5 B - Poly internal id number >13 CB100-ID 4 5 B - Poly user id number >17 CO# 4 7 C - Federal Information Processing > Standard code for county >21 CO-NAME 15 15 C - County name >36 CO-ABBR 4 4 C - County name abbreviation >40 ACRES 4 12 F 2 Total acres per county >CB100.AAT Arc Attribute Table >COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE DEC DESCRIPTION > 1 FNODE# 4 5 B - From-node id of linear feature > 5 TNODE# 4 5 B - To-node id of linear feature > 9 LPOLY# 4 5 B - Left-side polygon id of linear feature >13 RPOLY# 4 5 B - Right-side polygon id of linear feature >17 LENGTH 4 12 F 3 Length of linear feature in meters >21 CB100# 4 5 B - Internal id number >25 CB100-ID 4 5 B - Internal id number >29 ATYPE 4 5 B - Arc type >33 ANAME 15 15 C - Arc name
