Description:
Abstract:
The Office of State Planning, NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, with the aid of The Research Triangle Institute, created the GIS data set, Shoreline 1:24,000-scale, to be used as a template for the Closed Shellfish Harvesting Areas data layer. This layer depicts the coastal North Carolina shoreline, is a subset of the USGS linework from the 1:24,000-scale quadrangles, but is not a complete replication of the shoreline on those quadrangles.
Purpose:
This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS), and to assist in the mapping of the Closed Shellfish Havesting Areas.
Supplemental_Information:
This data layer was originally digitized at NC CGIA and placed into their 1:24,000-scale tile library. NC CGIA had the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) combine all shoreline tics to create one coverage. This coverage was sent back to NC CGIA, where edits were made to correct for dangles and edgematch problems. The final coverage was then used as a template for the Closed Shellfish Harvesting Areas data layer.

Revisions and updates to this layer include:
3.) filename: slcsha241298  The December 1998 update to this layer
consisted of projecting the data from NAD27 datum, State Plane
projection, units of measure feet TO: NAD83 DATUM, State Plane
PROJECTION, UNITS OF MEASURE METERS.  This was done to comply with
the NC Geographic Information Coordinating Council's
"Statement of Direction for North Carolina Corporate Geographic
Database Horizontal Reference, Datum and Unit of Measure".  This
reprojecting was done in various ways depending on the data type
and content.  Vector data was projected using the 'project' command
in ESRI's Arc software and topology was cleaned and built based on
coverage needs.  Raster data was projected using ESRI's Grid module
and various steps as applicable.
2.)  filename: slcsha24994  (previously named nc24.csha91694 and
cgia24.sl994)  The September 16, 1994 update consisted
of the addition of shoreline to match the Closed Shellfish
Harvesting Areas data layer.

NC CGIA digitized the shoreline from USGS 7.5 Minute series quadrangles. Checkplots were made and overlayed to the originals; linework and label corrections were made. Linework was checked for accuracy to within a pen-width of the original linework. The Research Triangle Institute then combined all shoreline tics to create one coverage and returned the file to CGIA for where edits were made to correct for dangles and edgematch problems. The attributes include only the "sacred items."

An arc and polygon coverage depicting coastal North Carolina shoreline as digitized from USGS 7.5 Minute series maps to be used as the template for the Closed Shellfish Harvesting Areas data layer. The polygon attribute table (PAT) has attribute data including total area in coverage units (square meters), total perimeter (linear meters), a polygon internal identification number, and a polygon user identification number. The items in the AAT also are all computer calculated. They include FNODE#, TNODE#, LPOLY#, RPOLY#, LENGTH, slcsha24#, and slcsha24-ID.
