The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission in cooperation with the North Carolina Center for Geographic Information and Analysis developed the digital Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats to enhance planning, siting, and impact analysis in areas proposed by NC WRC as being critical due to the presence of endangered or threatened aquatic species populations and the tributaries and headwaters of their habitats for statewide NC.
This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS), and to help protect sensitive areas by identifying streams which contain Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats.

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission presented NCCGIA with its field notes, and a WRC staff member identified pertinent streams from the existing NC CGIA data layer 1:100,000-scale hydrography, on screen. These were copied to a new coverage and attributes checked.
Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the data set was built for arc topology using the "build" command. The data set was then had its topology cleaned. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
These data represent the locations and identities of Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats as identified by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
The Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats were copied from an existing data layer, 1:100,000-scale hydrography. This layer was digitized from either 1:100,000- or 1:24,000-scale maps, USGS DLGs which meet National Map Accuracy Standards.

Digital Line Graphs used to identify hydrographic features
Paper maps used to supplement hydrographic features in the 1:100,000-scale hydrography library to maintain linework for all hydrographic features classified by NC Division of Environmental Management.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission provided the data as field notes. Significant Aquatic Endangered Species Habitats, which are stream features, were identified by a WRC representative to a NC CGIA analyst, on screen. Identified hydrographic features were copied to another coverage, maintaining the attributes. Other layers of information were overlaid onto the hydrographic linework to check identified locations.
