The NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, using US Geological Survey maps, developed the GIS data set, Federal Land Ownership, to delineate the boundaries of land in North Carolina that is owned and managed by the US Government. This file is updated as changes occur.
These data were created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).
The portion of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore which lies on Roanoke Island was digitized from 1:24,000-scale USGS quads, which had the boundary outlined by the Refuge manager. >system filename: flo file size = 3.42 mb > >Revisions and updates to this layer include: >7.) filename: flo403 The April 30, 2003 updates to this layer >consist of: >A) Boundary edits to the following federal lands from available >county parcel data: >Blue Ridge Parkway [Caldwell County portion only] >Camp Butner [Granville County] >Falls Lake [Granville County and Wake County] >Intracoastal Waterway [New Hanover County] >Jordan Lake [Wake County] >Kerr Reservoir [Granville County] >Marine (New Hanover) >Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge [Washington County] >Roanoke Rapids Air Force Station [Halifax County] >Seymour Johnson Air Force Base [Wayne County] >Sunny Point Air Force Base [New Hanover County] >Sunny Point Army Terminal [New Hanover County] >US Info Service [Pitt County] >B) Boundary edits to the following federal lands from Federal >Managed Areas (DENR, Division of Parks and Recreation)data: >Camp Lejeune Marine Base >Cape Hatteras National Seashore >Currituck National Wildlife Refuge >Dare County Air Force Range >Fort Raleigh National Historic Site >Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge >Guilford Court House National Moument >Jordan Lake >Kerr Reservoir >Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge >Lower Pamlico (Unknown Name) >MCAS Cherry Point - Bogue Airfield >MCAS Cherry Point - Main Air Station >MCAS Cherryl Point - Oak Grove Airfield >MCAS Cherryl Point - Piney Island >MacKey Island National Wildlife Refuge >Moores Creek National Battlefield >Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge >Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge >Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge >Pungo National Wildlife Refuge >Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge >Swanquarter National Wilderness Area >Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge >US Info Service >Wright Brothers National Memorial >C) Boundary edits to the following federal lands from Joint >Land Use Study 2002 GIS (Fort Bragg GIS) data: >Camp MacKall Military Reservation >Fort Bragg Air Force Base >Fort Bragg Military Reservation >D) Boundary edits to the following federal lands from US Forest >Service data: >Catfish Lake South Wilderness Area >Croatan >Nantahala >Pisgah >Pocosin Wilderness Area >Pond Pine Wilderness Area >Sheep Ridge Wilderness Area >Uwharrie > >6.) filename: flo600 The June 19, 2000 update to this layer >consisted of adding .pat attribute data that was inadvertently >not added with the May 17, 1995 boundary updates. The US Geological Survey delineated the boundaries on 1:250,000-, 1:100,000-, and 1:24,000-scale USGS topographic maps. NCCGIA digitized these boundaries and attributed them with codes supplied by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, including: controlling US land management agency, and FIPS. The digital files were plotted and overlayed to the originals and linework and label corrections were made.
Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the dataset was built for arc and polygon topology using the "build" command. The data set was then cleaned with a fuzzy tolerance of (1 foot). Topo- logy has not been edited since the last build or clean.
These data represent the locations and identities of lands in North Carolina, which are owned and managed by the US Govern- ment as mapped by the US Geological Survey and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Federal land boundaries were marked on 1:250,000-, 1:100,000-, or 1:24,000-scale maps, all of which meet National Map Accuracy Standards, using a best estimate with reference to surrounding features. Boundaries drawn were digitized and check plots used to ensure correct boundary location, within a line width.

The boundaries of the federally-owned lands in North Carolina were delineated by cartographers on USGS 1:250,000-, 1:100,000-, or 1:24,000-scale topographic maps. The linework was digitized by NCCGIA then it was checked by light table review. Any necessary corrections were made and new check plots were run. Post processing involved edgematching and mapjoining across map borders to create the final statewide data set. USFS suplies CGIA with updates as they occur.
