The Dam Safety Program in the Div. of Land Resources of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, in cooperation with the NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (CGIA), developed the digital data for dam locations that CGIA formatted and edited for use in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS). More than 4,700 registered dams are represented by point locations and numerous attributes describing the features of each dam, impoundment features, hazard ratings, ownership, contact information, and inspection results. CGIA verified and edited point locations for more than half of the dams.
These data were created to assist government agencies and others in making resource management decisions. The dam locations can be viewed and analyzed in the context of rivers and streams, cities and towns, areas prone to natural hazards, fish spawning and passage information and other data.

All attribute codes related to dam
Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the data set was built for point topology using the "build" command.
These data represent dam locations that (1) were verified and edited for positional accuracy and (2) were not verifiable using the available source data, but were checked and edited by the Dam Safety Program. Location of these dams was determined using USGS 1:24,000 quadrangles, the digital raster graphics data layer in the statewide corporate geographic database, and the hydrography (1:24,000) data layer in the statewide corporate geographic database.
Point locations are accurate for the verified dam locations at a scale of 1:24,000.
Locations of Dams
Point locations were generated based on latitude/longitude data. These locations were verified using aredit using DOQQ orthophotography images, digital raster graphics and/or 1:24,000-scale hydrography as a backcover This digital file is updated as changes occur.
