Description:
Abstract:
The East Carolina Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources, Citizens' Water Quality Monitoring Program Office and the North Carolina Center for Geographic Information and Analysis created this GIS data set of locations where private citizens were routinely taking water samples to assess water quality in North Carolina. Readings were taken weekly by citizens and monthly summaries provided to the Citizens' Water Quality Monitoring Program Office.
Purpose:
This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

>Revisions and updates to this layer include:
>4) filename: cwqms1100 In November 30, 2000 CGIA received a
>spreadsheet that contained the most recent locations for cwqms
>from The East Carolina Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources,
>Citizens' Water Quality Monitoring Program Office. This list corrects
>several latitude and longitude values from the original list. No
>extension table of values accompanies this layer. Contact the

>3.) filename: cwqms1298 The December 1998 update to this layer
>consisted of projecting the data from NAD27 datum, State Plane
>projection, units of measure feet TO: NAD83 DATUM, State Plane
>PROJECTION, UNITS OF MEASURE METERS. This was done to comply
>with the NC Geographic Information Coordinating Council's
>"Statement of Direction for North Carolina Corporate Geographic
>Database Horizontal Reference, Datum and Unit of Measure".
>This reprojecting was done in various ways depending on the
>data type and content. Vector data was projected using the
>'project' command in ESRI's Arc software and topology was
>cleaned and built based on coverage needs. Raster data was
>>projected using ESRI's Grid module and various steps as applicable.
>2.) filename: cwqms93 This file was renamed from nc.cwqms.
>This file and the cwqms89 file are the same except for the name
>change. They are both archived.
>1.) filename: cwqms89 This file was previously named nc.ptrf.

Process_Step:
Process_Description:
The East Carolina Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources-Citizens' Water Quality Monitoring Program Office used software to generate a latitude and longitude for monitoring sites based on location descriptions. The latitude and longitude data is stored in an EXCEL spreadsheet. This process is a change from the first version of this data when the station locations were plotted on USGS 30 x 60 Minute series paper quadrangles and were subsequently presented to NC CGIA for digitization and maintenance.
Process_Date: 20001128
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
CGIA converted data from an EXCEL spreadsheet to an ESRI ArcView GIS shapefile. The shapefile was then converted to a coverage using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software.
