The East Carolina Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources, Citizens' Water Quality Monitoring Program Office and the North Carolina Center for Geographic Information and Analysis created this GIS data set of locations where private citizens were routinely taking water samples to assess water quality in North Carolina. Readings were taken weekly by citizens and monthly summaries provided to the Citizens' Water Quality Monitoring Program Office.
This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

This was done to comply >with the NC Geographic Information Coordinating Council's >"Statement of Direction for North Carolina Corporate Geographic >Database Horizontal Reference, Datum and Unit of Measure". >This reprojecting was done in various ways depending on the >data type and content. Vector data was projected using the >'project' command in ESRI's Arc software and topology was >cleaned and built based on coverage needs. Raster data was >>projected using ESRI's Grid module and various steps as applicable. >2.) filename: cwqms93 This file was renamed from nc.cwqms. >This file and the cwqms89 file are the same except for the name >change. They are both archived. >1.) filename: cwqms89 This file was previously named nc.ptrf.

Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the data set was built for points using the "build" command. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
These data represent the locations of Citizen Water Quality Monitoring sites in North Carolina as mapped by the East Carolina Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources-Citizens' Water Quality Monitoring Program Office.
The Citizen Water Quality Monitoring sites were marked on 30 x 60 Minute USGS paper topographic maps which meet National Map Accuracy Standards, using a best estimate with reference to surrounding features.
electronic spreadsheet
The East Carolina Institute for Coastal and Marine Resources-Citizens' Water Quality Monitoring Program Office used software to generate a latitude and longitude for monitoring sites based on location descriptions. The latitude and longitude data is stored in an EXCEL spreadsheet. This process is a change from the first version of this data when the station locations were plotted on USGS 30 x 60 Minute series paper quadrangles and were subsequently presented to NC CGIA for digitization and maintenance.
CGIA converted data from an EXCEL spreadsheet to an ESRI ArcView GIS shapefile. The shapefile was then converted to a coverage using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software.
