The NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis developed the GIS data set, County Boundaries, as mapped by the US Geological Survey-Digital Line Graph Program to facilitate planning, siting and impact analysis in the 100 individual counties of North Carolina. This file enables the user to make various county-level determinations when used in conjunction with other data layers. This coverage does not include the shoreline but contains straight-lined boundaries of all of North Carolina's Counties.
These data were created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS). This data set includes county attributes relating to regional designations, population and economic characteristics.
system filename: cb100 approx. filesize = 0.31 mb Revisions and updates to this layer include: 3.) filename: cb100_1203 The December 2003 update to this layer consisted of correcting the boundaries for Carteret and Jones counties and Iredell and Mecklenburg counties according to DOT county boundary updates. (The DOTupdates match the Carteret County parcel data - dataed 10/24/2000.) 2.) filename: cb100_1298 The December 1998 update to this layer consisted of projecting the data from NAD27 datum, State Plane projection, units of measure feet TO: NAD83 DATUM, State Plane PROJECTION, UNITS OF MEASURE METERS. This was done to comply with the NC Geographic Information Coordinating Council's "Statement of Direction for North Carolina Corporate Geographic Database Horizontal Reference, Datum and Unit of Measure". This reprojecting was done in various ways depending on the data type and content. Vector data were projected using the 'project' command in ESRI's Arc software and topology was cleaned and built based on coverage needs. Raster data were projected using ESRI's Grid module and various steps as applicable. 1.) filename: cb100_90 This 1990 version was the first recorded release of this county boundary data. (This file was previously named nc100.cb)

NC CGIA digitized the county boundaries from USGS Digital Line Graphs on mylar basemaps. The polygons were attributed with county name, county FIPS number, county abbreviation, and total acres per county. Arcs were assigned an arc type and name. The digital files were plotted and overlayed to the originals and linework and label corrections were made.
Original processing: using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the data set was built for arc and polygon topology using the "build" command. The data set was then cleaned with a fuzzy tolerance of (1 foot.) Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
This data layer represents the jurisdictional boundaries of all counties in North Carolina, as mapped by the US Geological Survey-Digital Line Graph Program, 1:100,000-scale. The shoreline is not delineated in this file, only the shell of the state.
County boundaries were digitized from 30 x 60 Series USGS mylar basemaps, which meet National Map Accuracy Standards. The digital files were plotted and overlayed to the originals and needed line corrections were made to within one linewidth.
There is no vertical dimension to this data layer.
Mylar maps from which county boundaries were digitized.
County boundaries were delineated by USGS cartographers on mylar basemaps. Revisions were made based on NC DOT and/or NC Geodetic Survey information. The dataset was converted to shapefile format. In 1990, the file was created using ESRI's ARC/INFO version 5.0 GIS using a Calcomp digitizer and ARCEDIT. County boundaries without shoreline were digitized from hand delineated county boundaries on USGS 30 x 60 Series mylar basemaps. The digital files were attributed and checkplots were created for review by NC CGIA GIS analyst. Necessary corrections were made and new plots were run. Post processing involved edgematching and mapjoining of USGS 30 x 60 Series maps used to create the digitized data. This process generated one statewide polygon coverage showing the extent of county boundaries for NC.
