The NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis developed the GIS data set, County Boundaries with Shoreline, as mapped by the US Geological Survey-Digital Line Graph Program to facilitate planning, siting and impact analysis in the 100 individual counties of North Carolina. This file enables the user to make various county-level determinations when used in conjunction with other data layers. Another coverage contains straight-lined boundaries of the coastal counties.
This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).
system filename: cb100sl approx. filesize = 1.5 mb Revisions and updates to this layer include: 3.) filename: cb100sl The December 2003 update to this layer affected the shared county boundary lines between Iredell and Mecklenburg Counties as well as Craven and Cartaret Counties. 2.) filename: cb100sl1298 The December 1998 update to this layer consisted of projecting the data from NAD27 datum, State Plane projection, units of measure feet TO: NAD83 DATUM, State Plane PROJECTION, UNITS OF MEASURE METERS. This was done to comply with the NC Geographic Information Coordinating Council's "Statement of Direction for North Carolina Corporate Geographic Database Horizontal Reference, Datum and Unit of Measure". This reprojecting was done in various ways depending on the data type and content. Vector data was projected using the 'project' command in ESRI's Arc software and topology was cleaned and built based on coverage needs. Raster data was projected using ESRI's Grid module and various steps as applicable. 1.) filename: cb100sl298 The February 1998 version was the first archived version of this data. (this file was previously named nc100.cb.sl) A DOT-based county boundaries coverage at approximately 1:126,720 also exists in the Corporate Database. This DOT coverage should be used in conjunction with other data layers that were developed (i.e., clipped) using this coverage. Some of these coverages are: General Geology (1:250,000-scale) General Soils (1:250,000-scale) 1980 Census Boundaries/Population

NC CGIA digitized the county boundaries from USGS Digital Line Graphs on mylar basemaps. The polygons were attributed with county name, county FIPS number, county abbreviation, and total acres per county. Arcs were assigned an arc type and name. The digital files were plotted and overlayed to the originals and linework and label corrections were made.
Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the data set was built for arc and polygon topology using the "build" command. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.
This data layer represents the jurisdictional boundaries of all counties in North Carolina, as mapped by the US Geological Survey-Digital Line Graph Program, 1:100,000-scale, with shoreline included.
County boundaries were digitized from 30 x 60 Series USGS mylar basemaps, which meet National Map Accuracy Standards. The digital files were plotted and overlayed to the originals and needed line corrections were made to within one linewidth.

The file was created using ESRI's ARC/INFO version 5.0 GIS using a Calcomp digitizer and ARCEDIT. County boundaries with shoreline were digitized from hand delineated county boundaries on USGS 30 x 60 Series mylar basemaps. The digital files were attributed and checkplots were created for review by NC CGIA GIS analyst. Necessary corrections were made and new plots were run. Post processing involved edgematching and mapjoining of USGS 30 x 60 Series maps used to create the digitized data. This process generated one statewide polygon coverage showing the extent of county boundaries for NC.

An arc and polygon coverage depicting the North Carolina state and county boundaries without shoreline. The polygon attribute table (PAT) has attribute data including total area in coverage units(square meters), total perimeter (linear meters), polygon internal identification number, polygon user identification number, a FIPS numeric code indicating county identification, county name, county abbreviation, and total number of acres per county. The arc attribute table (AAT) includes unique numeric ids as well as arc type and arc name. >CB100.PAT Polygon Attribute Table >COL ITEM NAME WDTH OPUT TYP N.DEC ALTERNATE NAME >1 AREA 4 19 F 3 Area in coverage units >5 PERIMETER 4 12 F 3 Perimeter in coverage units >9 CB100SL# 4 5 B - Coverage Id >13 CB100SL-ID 4 5 B - User assigned Id >17 FIPS 4 7 B - County FIPS code >21 CO-NAME 15 15 C - County name >36 CO# 4 7 B - County FIPS code >40 CO-ABBR 4 4 C - 4 letter county abbreviation >44 SL-ID 4 5 B - >NC100.CB.AAT Arc Attribute Table >COLUMN ITEM NAME WIDTH OUTPUT TYPE DEC DESCRIPTION >1 FNODE# 4 5 B - From-node id of linear feature >5 TNODE# 4 5 B - To-node id of linear feature >9 LPOLY# 4 5 B - Left-side polygon id of linear feature >13 RPOLY# 4 5 B - Right-side polygon id of linear feature >17 LENGTH 4 12 F 3 Length of linear feature in meters >21 CB100SL# 4 5 B - Internal id number >25 CB100SL-ID 4 5 B - Internal id number >29 TYPE 4 5 B - Arc type
