Overview | Accessible Data | Usage Notes

Overview

Environmental Systems Research Institute, or ESRI has created a version of the ArcWeb Services that is available free to Students and Educators. According to ESRI, "ArcWeb Services for Students and Educators provides access to free GIS Web services for classroom work and research projects including both GIS content (street maps, topo maps, and imagery) and GIS tools (geocoding, routing, and spatial query)."

ArcWeb Services for Students and Educators provides free access to map services from Tele Atlas North America, the National Geographic Society, and GlobeXplorer that can be accessed through ArcMap and other GIS clients or used in custom Web applications.

In addition, students and educators can develop their own customized Web-mapping applications using industry-standard APIs such as SOAP and REST to provide GIS capabilities in a user-friendly Web environment.

For complete instructions and documentation on how to get started, go the ESRI's ArcWeb Services for Students and Educators website. The basic requirements are that you will have to sign up or use your existing ESRI Global Account, register for your ArcWeb Services account, agree to the license, and download and install the free ArcWeb Services Toolbar for use in ArcMap.

Accessible Data

The Students and Educators version of ArcWeb Services provides access to a limited amount of data, compared to the full ArcWeb Services offerings. It is the same offerings as provided to the ArcWeb Public Services, and is listed here.

ArcWeb vector and image datasets have been cataloged into GIS Lookup, and are listed below:

In addition, services are available to support national and global address geocoding, finding places, points of interest, routes, and generating reports.

Usage Notes

  • ArcWeb Services is one of many sources for online streaming data. See the OGC WMS page for additional streaming data sources.
  • You may experience odd behavior with various operations. For example, Figures 1 and 2 show similar-typed features being displayed inconsistently at different scales (Figures 1 and 2).

    I-540 missing at 1:500,000 scale
Figure 1. At 1:500,000 scale, I-540 is not displayed, even though other interstate highways and urban loops are shown.

    I-540 is shown 1:200,000 scale
Figure 2. At 1:200,000 scale, I-540 does appear.
