Historical Note

The department began in 1929 and its first director was J.V. Hofmann who served until 1948. In 1951 T. Ewald Maki was appointed to head up the forest management curriculum. He served until 1970 when C.B. Davey was appointed department head. Davey led the department until 1978 when John W. Johnson succeeded him. Following Johnson's death in late 1979, Art Cooper became department head and remained in that capacity until 1994.

The second series, Cooperatives, contains the records of the various university-industry cooperatives involved in specific forest research at N.C. State University. The cooperatives are arranged alphabetically.

The first, CAMCORE, stands for Central America & Mexico Coniferous Resources Cooperative. Its mission is to conserve, test, and improve forest species in the tropics and subtropics for the benefit of humankind. The records in this sub-series contain the cooperative by-laws, and its strategy for operations.

The records of the second cooperative, the Forest Equipment Cooperative, contain correspondence, technical reports and bulletins, and financial reports. The Forest Equipment Cooperative was organized in 1976 under the direction of Dr. Awatif Hassan, the College's first female faculty member.

The third cooperative, the Forest Nutrition Cooperative was originally called the Forest Fertilization Cooperative and was organized in 1969. The records in this group contain an administrative program review, budgets and financial statements, general correspondence, laboratory guidelines and a status report.

The Hardwood Research Cooperative is the fourth cooperative. It was organized in 1963 and coordinates and conducts basic and applied research aligned with refining and developing silvicultural means to produce forest product commodities and associated land values. The records inlaid general correspondence, advisory committee and annual meeting reports, research proposals, and information on a eucalyptus project.

The next cooperative is the College's earliest, the Tree Improvement Cooperative, organized in 1957 to support research in forest genetics, and work on selection, breeding ,and testing. Dr. Bruce J. Zobel headed the cooperative from its beginning until 1977.

The final cooperative is the Woodlot Research and Development Cooperative. In 1978, the Governor's Advisory Task Force on Small Woodlot Management identified a wide range of needs including intensified research and development in this sector of forestry. In 1979, the North Carolina Legislature responded by appropriating funds for the initiation of the Small Woodlot Forestry Research and Development Program. The program works to develop cost effective technology for the management of nonindustrial private forest lands and to develop incentives which will encourage landowners to apply this technology to their woodlands. The records contain a research report on whole-tree chipping and the governor's task force report.

The next series contains the administration records of the Outreach, Extension and Continuing Education department. These records document the administration and combined work of the College's various Extension Forest Resources programs. They include forest industry employment and wages reports, long range plans, media releases, plans of work, and correspondence of the specialists-in -charge of Extension Forest Resources, including John Gray, Walt Keller, Leon Harkins, and Michael P. Levi. The third sub-series contains the records of the Extension Forestry department from 1926 to 2007. The work of extension forestry pre-dates the formation of the College of Forest Resources. J.S. Homes was appointed first Extension Forester at N.C. State University in 1917. In 1925, R.W. Graeber became Extension Forester and provided strong leadership for the establishment of a forestry program. Graeber's work is well documented in this sub-series and include his reports on farm forest management demonstration, timber estimates, and Tennessee Valley Authority unit demonstration tracts. Also reflected is extension forestry's broad work on christmas trees, including general correspondence, marketing, planting, standards, and research material, county planting reports, as well as news clippings. There is also correspondence reflecting their relationship with both the North Carolina and National Christmas Tree Associations. County correspondence from nearly every North Carolina county is included, and relates answers to extension faculty and personnel from county extension agents and North Carolina citizens. Other documents in the sub-series include in-service training proposals, short course materials, plans of work, material on the annual 4-H forestry camp, and information regarding several forest pests including the gypsy moth, the balsam woolly aphid, and the southern pine beetle.
