 Historical Note

The Chi Epsilon National Honor Fraternity was established at the University of Illinois in 1923, to act as an honorary organization for students studying civil engineering. Students at NC State petitioned to form a chapter in 1948, a granted request designating them as the 23rd chapter of the national organization. Two years later (1950), NC State hosted the 11th national meeting (Conclave) of the organization, which took place in Withers Hall, the original engineering building on NC State's campus. The chapter remained active at NC State at least through 1978, but appears to have since disbanded.

The records of North Carolina State University's chapter of the Chi Epsilon Honor Fraternity include correspondence, meeting minutes, photographs, clippings, membership rosters, information on the formation of the chapter, and other general information. Some issues of the national Fraternity newsletter, The Transit are also included. Materials range in date from 1948 to 1978.

 Organization of the Collection

Materials are divided into two series. The first series, Chapter Records, contains materials created by NCSU's chapter; items are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically therein. The second series, The Transit, contains issues of the national Chi Epsilon newsletter; items are arranged chronologically.
