Historical Note

<bioghist>

The first chapter of what would later become Angel Flight was founded at the University of Omaha in 1952. Organized by women, the chapter's goal was to promote the Air Force R.O.T.C., and encourage men to join. Similar groups existed on college campuses throughout the country during the 1950s, going by a variety of names and performing an assortment of duties. In April of 1957, the many similar organizations united to form what was then known as Angel Flight. Under the direction of the Arnold Air Society, Angel Flight became a sanctioned auxillary of the Air Force R.O.T.C. program.

Interest in forming a chapter of Angel Flight at NC State began in 1961, but it was not until 1964 that enough women pledged for an official chapter to be granted. Initially, to become a member of Angel Flight at NC State, a woman had to be an undergraduate student, and she could not be married. The members of NC State's Angel Flight chapter worked in conjunction with the men in State's Air Force R.O.T.C. program, with their primary duties being to encourage male students to join the R.O.T.C. Students had to pledge to become members of Angel Flight, and were known as "Cherubs" and required to wear silver halos with their uniforms until becoming full Angel Flight members. The members of Angel Flight participated in many activities on campus, and were responsible for organizing and sponsoring an event that brought Bob Hope to Reynolds Collesium in 1966.

NC State's chapter of Angel Flight remains active as of 2008, though a reworking of the national organization in the 1980s led to a name change; some chapters around the country have retained the name Angel Flight, but most, including State's, now go by the name Silver Wings.
