<abstract label="Abstract" encodinganalog="520$a">
Oliver Max Gardner (1882-1947), an alumnus of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University), served as governor of North Carolina and chair of the Advisory Board of the U.S. Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion.  The Oliver Max Gardner Papers consists of four items related to Gardner's governorship and chairmanship of the above-mentioned Advisory Board.  Two of the items are letters to or from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and one item is a letter from the Secretary to the President Jonathan Daniels.

<p>Democrat Oliver Max Gardner was a legislator, lieutenant governor (1916) and governor of North Carolina (1929-1933); president of Cleveland Cloth Mills in Shelby, North Carolina; director of Sperry Corporation (1942); chair of the Advisory Board of the U.S. Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion (1942-1946); under-secretary of the United States Treasury (1946); alumnus of North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (1903) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's law school; lawyer in Shelby, North Carolina and Washington, D.C. President Harry Truman appointed Gardner ambassador to the Court of St. Jamess, but he died before reaching England. </p>

<p>The papers contain three letters written during Oliver Max Gardner's term as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion including: a letter from Jonathan Daniels to Gardner (21 April 1945), a copy of a letter from Franklin Roosevelt to Gardner (6 April 1945), and a copy of a letter to Roosevelt from Gardner (5 April 1945) all correspondence pertaining to the Advisory Board of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion. The collection also includes a program from the "Live-At-Home-Dinner" an event by the Press Association of North Carolina in honor of Gardner and Governor Elect J. C. B. Ehringhaus (1932).</p>
