Biographical Note

It is assumed that Franz Hüttner attended or taught at a royal technical school for weaving in the industrial city of Zwittau, Moravia, then a German province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, later part of the Czech Republic.

Scope and Content Note

A sophisticated album or workbook of textile weaving patterns and resulting fabric samples kept in 1902-1904 by Franz Hüttner. A handwritten introduction, including Hüttner's signature, is followed by 43 sheets with 273 mounted and precisely drawn patterns in red and black on intricate grids, and 45 mounted fabric samples produced following the patterns. Facing each plate is handwritten German text, providing a description of the patterns. A pencil sketch of a weaving machine is also included in the back cover. The album itself was produced in Vienna.
