The W. C. Jackson Papers contain diaires, correspondence, photographs, and ephemera belong to W. C. Jackson and his family. The material dates from 1891 to 1951. The bulk of the collection's content consists of family correspondence relating early 20th-century family life in North Carolina and a set of diaries maintained by Jackson that recounts farming and weather observations in North Carolina during the first half of the twentieth century.

			<head>Biographical Note</head>
			<p>Born in <geogname>Pitt County, North Carolina</geogname>, in 1870, <persname>William Colbert (Willie) Jackson</persname> graduated from the <corpname>North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts</corpname> in 1896 with a B. S. in General Farming, Dairying and Lumber Manufacturing. Jackson settled in the <geogname>Wake Forest</geogname> area after graduation. He established himself as a farmer and married <persname>Mary Smith</persname> of <geogname>Winterville, North Carolina</geogname>. The couple had seven children, six sons and one daughter. Throughout his life, Jackson maintained close ties with his alma mater and his fellow graduates, attending Alumni Day exercises every year. Three of Jackson's children also graduated from <corpname>North Carolina State University</corpname>. Jackson was an active member of the <corpname>North Carolina Agricultural Society</corpname> and the <corpname>Wake Forest Baptist Church</corpname>. He died in January of 1952 at the age of eighty-two. </p>

				<p>The W. C. Jackson Papers contains <genreform>diaries</genreform>, <genreform>correspondence</genreform> from friends and family, college grade sheets, notes, <genreform>photographs</genreform> and <genreform>ephemera</genreform>. The material is grouped into six separate series. The first series, Diaries, consists of a set of diaries that Jackson maintained from 1912-1931. The diaries give detailed observations of weather conditions and day-by-day accounts of the operations necessary to running a farm. They also provide some insight into Jackson's personal experiences during that time period. Series two consists of a chronological grouping of family letters and postcards accumulated by <persname>W. C. Jackson</persname> over his lifetime and correspondence between Mrs. <persname>Mary Jackson</persname> and the couple's children. The next series, <corpname normal="North Carolina State University">North Carolina State College</corpname>, contains items pertinent to W. C. Jackson's college days and his relationship with his alma mater. Series four, 50th Wedding Anniversary, is a collection of letters, cards and announcements honoring Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Jackson on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1948. The fifth series, Photographs, consists of photographs of members of the Jackson family. The final series, Ephemeral Material, contains items of interest collected by Jackson.</p>

					<p>This series is organized into two sub-series: General Correspondence and <persname>Mary Jackson</persname> and her Children. The General Correspondence sub-series contains correspondence between <persname>W. C. Jackson</persname> and Mary Jackson, as well as correspondence from a variety of family members and friends. This sub-series also contains assorted greeting cards received by Jackson family members. The Mary Jackson and her Children sub-series contains correspondence between Mary and her children. The letters demonstrate the affectionate ties that were maintained between Mary and her children. In particular it documents the relationship between Mary and her only daughter, Elizabeth as she matured.</p>
