<abstract label="Abstract" encodinganalog="520$a">This account book covers the period from January through March, 1887.  It contains a record of transactions made in a drygoods store in Wilson, North Carolina.  The store was owned by Thomas Jefferson Hadley and Alpheus Branch, founder of the BB &amp; T bank.</abstract>

<p><persname>Alpheus Branch</persname> was the founder of the <corpname>Branch Banking and Trust Company</corpname> (<corpname>BB and T</corpname>).  He was born in <geogname>Hallifax County, North Carolina</geogname>, and relocated to <geogname normal="Wilson, N.C.">Wilson</geogname> to attend <corpname>Deems Military Academy</corpname>.  He married <persname>Nannie Barnes</persname>, the daughter of General <persname>Joshua Barnes</persname>, one of Wilson's founders.</p>
<p>Upon settling in Wilson after the Civil War, Branch entered into a partnership with <persname>Thomas Jefferson Hadley</persname>, thereby establishing a mercantile business known as <corpname>B and H</corpname>.  Branch and Hadley also ventured into the banking business in the 1870s, and continued their association until Branch purchased Hadley's shares in 1887.  </p>
<p>Branch died on January 3, 1893.</p>

<p>The <corpname>B and H Company</corpname> was owned by <persname>Alpheus Branch</persname> and <persname>Thomas J. Hadley</persname> of <geogname>Wilson, North Carolina</geogname>.  This 720-page sales book covers the period from January 1 - April 1, 1887.  Each entry includes the name of the customer, names of the items purchased and their quantities, their cost, and the date purchased.  Products sold ranged from livestock to household goods to foodstuff.</p>
