 Historical Note

Alpheus Branch was the founder of the Branch Banking and Trust Company (BB and T). He was born in Hallifax County, North Carolina, and relocated to Wilson to attend Deems Military Academy. He married Nannie Barnes, the daughter of General Joshua Barnes, one of Wilson's founders.

Upon settling in Wilson after the Civil War, Branch entered into a partnership with Thomas Jefferson Hadley, thereby establishing a mercantile business known as B and H. Branch and Hadley also ventured into the banking business in the 1870s, and continued their association until Branch purchased Hadley's shares in 1887.

Branch died on January 3, 1893.

 Scope and Content Note

The B and H Company was owned by Alpheus Branch and Thomas J. Hadley of Wilson, North Carolina. This 720-page sales book covers the period from January 1 - April 1, 1887. Each entry includes the name of the customer, names of the items purchased and their quantities, their cost, and the date purchased. Products sold ranged from livestock to household goods to foodstuff.
