The Writings series is divided into five subseries, which include Reviews by Lee Smith, Drafts of Novels, Short Stories, Miscellaneous Writing, and Essays.

The series documents Smith's prolific work as a writer. Drafts of Novels are arranged by chronological order of novels. Many of the records regarding novels document the process of creating a novel from Smith's handwritten text to a computer generated manuscript to the blue lines of the novel. Notes and editorial comments accompany drafts of novels. The Short Stories are divided into published and unpublished.
