The Roger Powell Marshall Papers, 1913-1985, include personal correspondence, course materials, notes, and publications.  The collection also includes a number of playbills from Broadway shows and information on Marshall's travels.

<abstract encodinganalog="545">Roger Powell Marshall (1899-1987) was an educator, author, and North Carolina historian. He served as a Professor of English at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) from 1926 to 1964. </abstract>

<head>Biographical Note</head>

<p>Roger Powell Marshall was born August 9, 1899, in Gastonia, North Carolina.  He received his B.A. from Wake Forest College in 1920, his M.A. from Columbia University in 1923, and a M.Sc. From North Carolina State College in 1932. Marshall was a member of the English Department at North Carolina State University from 1926 to 1964, eventually rising to the rank of full professor. He also served as Acting Department Head from 1942 until 1945. He was most well known for his work in the freshman English courses.  In addition, Marshall was regarded as an expert on the state's literature and amassed a highly respected collection of North Carolina literature.  He died on August 24, 1987.

<scopecontent><head>Scope and Content Note</head>
<p>The Roger Powell Marshall Papers, 1913-1985, include correspondence, course materials, notes, and publications. The General files contain biographical and family information, personal correspondence, class notes and material relating to North Carolina literature.  This series also contains some copies of short stories excerpted from <title render="doublequote" show="embed">The Progressive Farmer</title>, some church bulletins, and several Metropolitan Opera programs, 1924, 1948-1949. A Travel/Entertainment series contains Broadway playbills, bulk 1947-1974, theatrical reviews and programs, and some travel flyers and programs (North Carolina and Virginia).  The Writings, Publications and Speeches series contains some reprints of Professor Marshall's writings on North Carolina literature, reviews of Marshall's <title render="doublequote" show="embed">The Letters of William Gilmore Simms: Volume I, 1830-1844</title>, professional correspondence and class materials, including class assignments and tests, 1931-1956, grade books, class outlines, and admission information.
