<abstract encodinganalog="520">The Frank Houston Smith Papers consist of documents related to Smith and Drs. John O. Halverson and Francis W. Sherwood, two of his colleagues at the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station (later Agricultural Research Service) at the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). The bulk of the collection, 1929-1942,  consists of professional correspondence of Halverson regarding gossypol, a toxin in cotton plants and cottonseed meal.</abstract>

<bioghist><p>Frank Houston Smith was born in Cornelius, North Carolina, on 1903 May 18. He received degrees in chemistry from Davidson College in 1926 (B.S.) and the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1931 (M.S.). Smith was a researcher and professor of animal nutrition at North Carolina State College, beginning as a research assistant in 1928. He became an associate professor in 1946, and a full professor in 1961. Smith specialized in research on gossypol, a toxin in cotton plants and cottonseed meal. A member of several professional and honorary societies, he retired as professor emeritus in 1973.</p>

<p>The <persname>Frank Houston Smith</persname> Papers consist of documents related to Smith, a professor of <subject>animal nutrition</subject> at the <corpname>North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering</corpname> (later <corpname>North Carolina State University</corpname>) from 1928 to 1973. The bulk of the collection consists of professional correspondence to and from Halverson, 1929-1942, regarding <subject>gossypol</subject>, a toxin in cotton plants and cottonseed meal.One folder contains a curriculum vitae and professional correspondence, 1960-1984. Two folders contain memorials written by Smith for two of his colleagues at the <corpname>North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station</corpname> (later Agricultural Research Service) at North Carolina State College--Dr. <persname>John Oliver Halverson</persname> and Dr. <persname>Francis Webber Sherwood</persname>--along with related material. </p>
