Biographical Note

<bioghist>
Born in 1889, Walter Clyburn Taylor attended the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) and graduated in 1913 with a degree in textile engineering. While he was a student he was involved in a variety of clubs and activities and held positions of leadership in several of these organizations, including serving as president of the Tompkins Textile Society and business manager for Wau Gau Rac—a weekly publication dedicated to the events of the Athletic Association of the college.

Taylor served in the military during World War I and was stationed in Europe for more than a year during the hostilities. At some point after the war he returned to North Carolina and to the textile industry: the University's 1927 alumni directory lists him as residing in Charlotte, North Carolina, and working for the Duplan Silk Corporation.

Scope and Content Note

The Walter Clyburn Taylor Papers consists of a number of papers relating to textiles and their manufacture. Previously bound in a two-ring notebook, these papers represent Taylor’s work for both his sophomore course on carding and spinning in and for courses taken during his junior year at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Included are handwritten and typewritten essays on a variety of subjects, including, but not limited to, “Cotton-Carding and Spinning-Early History,” “Present Cotton Growing Areas,” “The Cotton Fibre,” “Carding,” “The Revolving Flat Card,” “Stripping,” “Grinding,” “Card Calculations,” “The Railway Head,” and “Drawing Frames.” Also present are tables of mechanical settings and several technical drawings for machinery, as well as articles clipped from technical journals. Nearly all of these articles are from the technical journal
Cotton
, and most are part of a series of articles entitled “Cotton Mill Machinery Calculations” written by B. M. Parker. All the materials in the notebook date from between 1911 and 1912.
