Historical Note

Wood Products Extension was originally part of the Agricultural Extension Service under the Smith-Lever Act (1914 May 8). This act provided for agricultural extension work by agricultural colleges across the country. It also produced a system of county farm agents that were stationed at land-grant colleges. In 1958, the Extension Forestry Department split into two sections, creating the Extension Forest Management and the Wood Products Extension. Today, the Wood Products Extension at North Carolina State University is a part of the Cooperative Extension Service, College of Natural Resources, Department of Wood and Paper Science.

Scope and Content Note

The Wood Products Extension Records contain documents that pertain to the wood industry in North Carolina and in other states. There are many manuals that contain information about equipment and procedures used in wood production. The majority of the papers in the collection come from various workshops that were held at North Carolina State University and other land-grant universities. These papers address the numerous aspects and concerns of the wood industry in the United States, particularly in North Carolina. There are also publications issued by state and federal departments of forestry. Much of the material documents the work of extension specialists, William T. Huxster, William E.Keppler, and Donald E. Nelson. The bulk of the documents come in the form of papers, worksheets, data sheets, and course outlines.

Organization of Collection

The Wood Products Extension Records, having no original order, is now comprised of six series: Historical Information, General Records, Publicity, Papers, Education, and Publications. Within series or subseries, the material is primarily arranged in chronological order.

    5 folders

This series deals primarily with the Wood Products Extension Specialist Training School. Most of the documents date from either 1961 or 1962. The series consist of worksheets, answer sheets, course outlines, data sheets, and handouts. While the "Workshop for Maximum Hardwood Yield in the Rough Mill" has nothing to do with the specialist school, the records contain documents relating to the workshop, like itineraries, a program for the two-day workshop, a report, and a registrant list. This workshop, which was similar to the previous workshops held in North Carolina and New Hampshire, was held in Jamestown, N.Y., 1967 May 24 - 25, and was in association with New York State College of Foresty, Forest Products and the Manufacturers Association of Jamestown. The Slide Index contains a master index of 35 mm slide sets developed by the Wood Products Extension.
