Records documenting the work of two foundations created to support the research and educational work of the College of Natural Resources (formerly College of Forest Resources) at North Carolina State University. Records, 1953-1981, of the North Carolina Forestry Foundation include minutes from board of directors meetings, development council annual reports, and general correspondence. They also include information concerning the administration and management of Hofmann Forest, including forest manager reports and general correspondence including letters and news clipping regarding the forest fire of 1972. Records, 1952-1986, of the Pulp and Paper Foundation contain general correspondence, board of directors and general foundation annual meeting reports, budget plans and information on their minority program. Also well documented are the activities of numerous foundation committees, including the curriculum, investment, recruitment and scholarship committees. There is also general scholarship correspondence, lists of pulp and paper alumni, and a general history of the foundation.
The North Carolina Forestry Foundation and the Pulp and Paper Foundation support the research and educational work of the College of Natural Resources (formerly College of Forest Resources) at North Carolina State University. The Forestry Foundation, created in 1929, is the oldest foundation at the University. The Pulp and Paper Foundation was incorporated in 1954.

Historical Note
Originally founded in 1929, the North Carolina Forestry Foundation is the oldest foundation at North Carolina State University. From its early days, Foundation promoted a complete forest management education program including objectives to promote the production, improvement, and preservation of growing timber; to encourage the adoption of means and methods for the reforestation of cut-over timber lands or lands with no timber growth; to hold tracts of virgin timber as object lessons in forestry; to use these tracts of land to educate the public; and to encourage the donation of money and the making of gifts to the Foundation. To achieve these goals, Dr. J. V. Hofmann, began acquiring land in the early 1930s. He acquired 78,000 acres in Jones and Onslow Counties that later became known as the Hofmann Forest. Currently, the Foundation and the College of Natural Resources control or oversee about 90,000 acres of land used for the various objectives mentioned above.
The Pulp and Paper Foundation was incorporated in 1954. The Southern paper industry desired to have a regional paper science curriculum to provide a source of graduates with the technical and engineering skills necessary to immediately have an impact on its paper mills. Through the foundation, industry provided many scholarships and summer jobs to students. The Pulp and Paper Foundation also assisted in the recruitment of undergraduate students for the Pulp and Paper Science program.
