Historical NoteThe Agricultural Experiment Station was transferred from the state to North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (A&M College, later North Carolina State University) on 9 December 1889 and became a source of contention between the state Dept. of Agriculture and the college through the early part of the twentieth century. The title "Agricultural Experiment Station" was changed to "Agricultural Research Service" in 1979.
