The Institute of Biological Sciences was created in 1962 in order to "encourage and promote research and teaching in basic biology and to coordinate inter-departmental activities." The Institute contained the Departments of Botany, Entomology, Genetics, Plant Pathology, and Zoology. In addition to fostering research within these departments, the Institute also administered a number of Summer Institutes in various applied sciences, mostly for college and high school teachers. During the time it operated, faculties in Microbiology and Biochemistry were also added.
Administratively, the Institute took the place of the Division of Biological Sciences, which was created in 1950 and united the faculties in botany, entomology, plant pathology, and zoology. This division had been disbanded in 1958, and individual departments were created in the above disciplines, plus genetics. In 1971 the Institute became the Biological Sciences Program, where scholarship continues today combining coursework in the Departments of Botany (Plant Biology after 2006), Crop Science, Genetics, Plant Pathology, and Zoology.
The collection consists of records describing the function and activities of the Institute of Biological Sciences from 1950 to 1971. This includes material relating to the development of the Institute itself, along with items from some of the departments which composed it. General administrative files, including correspondence, research proposals and projects, facilities information, and outreach -- such as conferences and trips -- are also contained herein.
The records are divided into two series. The first, General Records, contains correspondence, records from the various departments within the Institute, and administrative material relating to the running of the program. The corrspondence contained in this series has been left in its original order as received by the Archives. The Research and Development series contains material on equipment and research project requests, along with files relating to a number of research projects.
Contains correspondence, departmental and committee meeting minutes, facilities information, and records on several summer programs run by the Institute. These records are concerned with the daily running of the Institute, as well as with some of the programs it sponsored. Note that some of the correspondence files pre-date the founding of the Institute; they relate to its predecessor, the Division of Biological Sciences.
Contains correspondence, grants, proposals, and research files for a variety of subjects, including facilities, research trips, and projects. The Atomic Energy Commission files refer to a variety of projects undertaken on the effects of radiation on certain plants and animals. These records are arranged into two subseries, Grants and Proposals and Project Files.
