Historical Note


The Department of Microbiology at North Carolina State University had its beginnings with courses in bacteriology that were first offered during the 1894-1895 academic year. It was long a program within the Department of Botany and Bacteriology (Plant Biology after 2006). Microbiology was officially established as a separate department in 1965.

Scope and Content Note


This record sub-group contains research project files, correspondence, memoranda, departmental reviews, annual reports, departmental history, and account information for research funding pertaining to the functioning of the Department of Microbiology. Records include material on Sweet Acidophilus milk and the Institute of Biological Sciences. Most dates given are approximate. This sub-group has not been processed, and it was formerly numbered UA 100.18.
