The Harrelson Fund Committee Records contains minutes, correspondence, financial information, and annual reports documenting the activities of the Harrelson Fund Committee. There are also a large amount of documents related to the Harrelson Lectures, many of which document the planning and scheduling of lectures. Also included are texts of many of the lectures and faculty nominations for lecturers as well as promotional material such as flyers, posters, and brochures.

The Harrelson Fund Committee was established at North Carolina State College in 1961 to manage the funds of former Chancellor John W. Harrelson's endowment. Since the Committee's founding, they have aspired to use the funds in accordance with the priorities established in Harrelson's will: "lectures (first claim); books; works of art; appropriate markers for buildings named for persons." Accordingly, one of the most important functions of the Harrelson Committee has been to organize the annual Harrelson Lectures, where a well-known public or academic figure gives a series of talks at NC State University. During the 2018-2019 academic year, the Harrelson Fund Committee transitioned into the University Standing Committee on Speakers and Lectures.

Biographical/historical note

The Harrelson Fund Committee was established at North Carolina State College in 1961 to manage the funds of former Chancellor John W. Harrelson's endowment. Since the Committee's founding, they have aspired to use the funds in accordance with the priorities established in Harrelson's will: "lectures (first claim); books; works of art; appropriate markers for buildings named for persons." They have paid special attention to what Harrelson identified as "two areas that have long been neglected at State College." First, "towards securing outstanding mathematical works for the library and distinguished scholars for visiting lectures." Second, "towards securing some paintings for certain areas of the campus, such as the library and the College Union." Accordingly, one of the most important functions of the Harrelson Committee has been to organize the annual Harrelson Lectures, where a well-known public or academic figure gives a series of talks at NC State University. During the 2018-2019 academic year, the Harrelson Fund Committee transitioned into the University Standing Committee on Speakers and Lectures.
