The Student Government records contain meeting minutes, correspondence and publications generated as a result of the establishment and activities of Student Government on NCSU's campus. Of particular interest are documents describing the "Student Rebellion" of 1905 which facilitated the need for student governing on campus as well as records documenting the ratification of the Constitution in 1955 and the creation of the Student Senate in 1969. There are also records concerning campus elections, political rallies and community involvement as well as student "disturbances" on and off campus. In addition, the collection contains publications of student government laws, bound copies of annual records and community service type publications which were circulated among the entire student body.

Student Government at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) began in 1921. At that time, the group was made up of both students and faculty and was called Campus Government. Following the establishment of the Faculty Senate in 1954, a new Student Government Constitution was ratified in 1955, reestablishing a separate Student Government which included a student body president and governing committees. The Student Senate came into being in 1969 with the ratification of the Student Body Constitution. In 1972, Student Government moved to the Talley Student Center, where it remained until moving to the Witherspoon Student Center.

Biographical/historical note

Student Government at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) began in 1921. At that time, the group was made up of both students and faculty and was called Campus Government. Following the establishment of the Faculty Senate in 1954, a new Student Government Constitution was ratified in 1955, establishing a separate Student Government which included a student body president and governing committees.

The Student Senate came into being in 1969 with the ratification of the Student Body Constitution. This Constitution is still the present charter of the Student Body Government. While occasional amendments to this constitution have been ratified, most of its provisions remain intact from 1969, and the evolution of Student Government continued in statute. The loose framework of the Student Body Constitution has allowed these statutes to change and evolve considerably over the years. There was a comprehensive revision of the statutes in 1998 and in 2002, the Omnibus Executive Branch Act created the current Executive Branch.

In 1972, Student Government moved to the Talley Student Center, where it remained until moving to the Witherspoon Student Center. The records of the Student Government were traditionally kept on hand in the offices, but in 1999 the Student Government Archives switched to an online format. These documents can now be viewed online.

Scope/content

The Student Government records contain meeting minutes, correspondence and publications generated as a result of the establishment and activities of Student Government on NCSU's campus. Of particular interest are documents describing the "Student Rebellion" of 1905 which facilitated the need for student governing on campus as well as records documenting the ratification of the Constitution in 1955 and the creation of the Student Senate in 1969.

Student government has been an active presence on NCSU's campus and these records reflect not only the day to day workings of the Student Government but also the interaction between the government and the student body at large. To this effect there are records concerning campus elections, political rallies and community involvement as well as student "disturbances" on and off campus. In addition the collection contains publications of student government laws, bound copies of annual records and community service type publications which were circulated among the entire student body.
