The Sigma Chi Fraternity was established in 1855 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The fraternity is one of the oldest in the country, open to male students only, for the purposes of promoting friendship and helping to develop value-based leaders. The Sigma Chi Fraternity is not affiliated with any subject content area; it operates as a social fraternity and secret society. North Carolina State's chapter (the Delta Epsilon Chapter) was formed out of the existing Chi Sigma Fraternity in 1943. In 1922, a group called Chi Alpha Sigma was established at NC State, with the intention of becoming a full chapter of Sigma Chi, but was forced to become inactive before this goal could be reach because of the effects of the Great Depression. In 1940, Chi Sigma was established, representing the alumni of Chi Alpha Sigma, and again carrying the intent of becoming a full chapter of Sigma Chi. This goal was finally reached in 1943, though the Grand Consul (overall leader at the national level) had to first convince the Sigma Chi chapter at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to support NC State's efforts - UNC's chapter had voted against allowing NC State a chapter every time NC State had petitioned for one between 1922 and 1943. After UNC conceded to the formation of a full chapter at NC State, the Delta Epsilon chapter was chartered, and remained active as of 2008.
The records of the Delta Epsilon Chapter (North Carolina State University's chapter) of the Sigma Chi Fraternity include their by-laws, clippings, correspondence, publications, information on the formation of the chapter, a scrapbook commemorating the chapter's installation, and other general information about the chapter and its activities. Materials range in date from 1942 to 1987.
