The Kappa Alpha Order was founded in 1865 at Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Virginia. Robert E. Lee, then president of the college, was the inspiration for the fraternity, which was founded on the principles of honor, chivalry, and gentility. Though the Order has grown to include chapters across the country, chapter membership was originally limited to Southern states, and the fraternity became known as the "Southern Fraternity." North Carolina State's chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order - the Alpha Omega Chapter - was established in or before 1937. The chapter remained active as of 2004, but may have since disbanded.
The records of the Alpha Omega Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order contain correspondence, publications, information on pledging, membership rosters, information on the chapter house, and other general information about the fraternity and its activities. Materials range in date from 1937 to 1983.
