The records of the North Carolina State University chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) contain committee files, meeting minutes, files on faculty grievances, general information on the chapter, and files on legislative interactions with the state government of North Carolina. The purpose of the Association is to protect the right of professors to practice academic freedom, and to advance equality for all professors within academic environments, especially women.
North Carolina State University's chapter of the AAUP was formed sometime in or before 1932, following what was perceived as an unfair dismissal of a faculty member from his position. The chapter was still active as of 2008.

Historical Note
The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) was formed in 1915 at Johns Hopkins University to ensure academic freedom for all faculty. Chapters were quickly formed at other universities, and the AAUP is (as of 2008) a unified, national organization which promotes and defends the rights of university professors to teach and write what they believe.
North Carolina State University's chapter of the AAUP was formed sometime in or before 1932, following what was perceived as an unfair dismissal of a faculty member from his position. By the mid-1930s, there were at least thirty faculty members on campus who had joined the AAUP chapter. The chapter experienced periods in the late 1930s and 1940s of a lesser faculty involvement, but was revived after the conclusion of World War II, and has experienced steady growth since that time.
The NCSU chapter of the AAUP has worked to protect and promote the academic freedom of NC State professors over the years, as well as to push for equality within the profession, especially in the treatment of women faculty. The chapter was also responsible for organizing and promoting a movement on campus that led to the creation of the Faculty Senate, an important and influential faculty organization at NCSU which allows faculty members a participatory role in university administration.
