The goal of University Housing is to provide programs, services, and facilities that promote educational and personal development of campus residents. It focuses on embracing diversity, encouraging leadership and civic engagement, and fostering a strong bond between North Carolina State University and its students. The University Housing staff meets twice a semester to evaluate policies, and recommendations and concerns of administration, students and community members.
University Housing (formerly the Department of Housing and Residence Life) was created in the 1950s and placed at that time under the administration of the Division of Student Affairs (where it remains as of 2010). Since its inception, University Housing has undergone many transformations, including its latest during the 1990s, when committees met to re-evaluate the goals and purposes of University Housing.
The records of University Housing at North Carolina State University contain administrative information (including statistics on housing and students), correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports and policy declarations, and a video of the rededication of Bragaw Hall. These records also contain information intended for students, such as brochures on housing options and resident programs, forms, guidelines and flyers. Materials range in date from 1934 to 1994.
