The North Carolina State University Athletics Department Subject Files contain correspondence, contracts, forms, newspaper clippings, minutes, certificates, pamphlets, and schedules. The records are the subject files of the North Carolina State University Athletics Department. The records date from 1909 through 1976, although the bulk of the files are from 1945-1965.

The college first became officially involved in athletics when it financed the school's football team in 1893, the year after the team's first unofficial games. Other sports were organized by the early twentieth century. All teams began using the nickname "Wolfpack" in 1947. As of 2006, N.C. State University had eleven men's and eleven women's varsity athletic teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Biographical/historical note

Athletics began officially at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later renamed North Carolina State University) in 1892 when a group of student formed a football team to play against a local high school. The following year it played its first formal games after the Board of Trustees granted it funds. The baseball team first played in 1894, and men’s basketball in 1911. In the early years the teams used various nicknames, including "Red Terrors." In 1921, the NC State football team began using the name "Wolfpack," and in 1947 this name was officially adopted for all athletic teams. NC State became a charter member of the Southern Conference in 1921, but it left in 1953 to help form the Atlantic Coast Conference. The racial integration of athletics began at NC State in 1958. In 1974, the first women's athletic team (basketball) began play, and the following year women's softball and volleyball were introduced.

Scope/content

The North Carolina State University Athletics Department Subject Files contain records from 1909 through 1976. The bulk of the records, however, are from approximately 1945 to 1965. A great number of the records have some relation to Roy Clogston, athletic director from 1948 to 1969, even if they are not filed specifically under his name.

Individual files relate both to individual sports and to the Athletic Department as a whole. Significant records include some information about N.C. State's transition to the Atlantic Coast Conference and about the school's interactions with the National Collegiate Athletic Association. There is also a small amount of correspondence relating to racial concerns (for instance, correspondence from opposing schools' athletic directors inquiring where African American players on their teams could be housed while visiting Raleigh).

The records have been arranged alphabetically by folder title. They have largely been maintained in the order in which they were found, although several have been merged with the rest of the files (for example, contents of a "miscellaneous" folder were interfiled in other folders). Further, several folder names have been changed for improved research access.
