Scope and Content Note

The North Carolina State University Special Collections Research Center records contain correspondence, card catalogs, accession files, and material relating to the activities and administration of the department. This subgroup also contains 51 TIFF files of Gil Stose Photographs of the Water Garden, Raleigh, NC, taken in 2007.

Historical Note

The NCSU Libraries established the Department of Special Collections in 1993; at the same time, the University Archives - established in the 1960s but with origins dating back to 1939 - was transferred from the Provost's Office to the administrative jurisdiction of the Libraries and - together with the Rare Books and Manuscripts - formed the new program.

In 2004, the Department of Special Collections was renamed the Special Collections Research Center to emphasize the role it plays in support of the university's land-grant mission and how it supplements the research collections held in the general collections of the NCSU Libraries.

Access to Collection

This collection is open for research; access requires at least 24 hours advance notice, with the following exceptions:

Patron registration forms and duplication requests are closed until 75 years after date of creation. This collection contains digital files, which have access restrictions. The Special Collections Research Center will provide copies of digital files to patrons, but cannot guarantee that these files will open.
