Historical Note

Like information and communication technologies in general, the purpose and role of NC State’s Information Technology Division (ITD) has evolved over the past two decades. In its early days as the Computing Center in the 1970s, the organization supported mainframe computers used primarily for what was then leading-edge scientific and research computing. ITD now provides systems and services essential to the functioning of the university as a whole—from a state-of-the-technology network backbone, to computing account privileges, to help desk support available to all NC State students faculty and staff.

Led by Vice Provost for Information Technology, Sam Averitt, ITD comprises six units:

Computing Services: includes ResNet, Education and Outreach, Publications, Software Support, Remedy call-tracking and a staff of Computing Consultants with a wide range of expertise, including Multimedia, Macintosh solutions, and SAS Grant support.

Technology Support Services, which provides the NC State Help Desk (a single gateway to both academic and administrative computing help) and Distributed Support Services

Systems: Includes Unix and Web Services, Microsystems services, and IT security services. supports essential computing systems and services including e-mail, web services, data storage systems, campus-wide multi-platform Unity computing environment, campus IT security , and other services.

Computer Operations, maintains 24 x 7 x 365 network monitoring and operational support for central academic and administrative servers and mainframes. Operations also supportsOptical Mark Reading Services for the campus.

Communication Technologies (ComTech)-Network Operations & Development, in partnership with Resource Management and Information Systems, designs and operates the campus data network infrastructure.

ITD also coordinates the NC State IT Accessibility Initiative and provides High Performance and Grid Computing research computing services.

On November 1, 2007, ITD and Resource Management and Information Systems (RMIS) joined to form the Office of Information Technology (OIT).
