This collection contains records relating to projects and initiatives undertaken by the Facilities Division in the years 1964-2006. Materials include blueprints, budget items, correspondence, memoranda, plans for projected construction and renovation of campus facilities, and photographs.

The mission of the North Carolina State University Facilities Division has historically been to "create and preserve a physical environment that advances the university." Key projects of the Facilities Division during the period covered by the collection included the development of NCSU's Centennial Campus, making the campus more accessible to disabled persons; renovation of Bragaw and Holladay Halls as well as Reynolds Coliseum; new construction on D. H. Hill Library; repairs to parking decks; and management of various outlying real properties.

Biographical/historical note

The mission of the North Carolina State University Facilities Division has historically been to "create and preserve a physical environment that advances the university." What this means on a practical level is that the division oversees the construction and maintenance of all campus buildings and other facilities, ranging from sporting venues to parking decks to streetlights. The division also supervises the purchase, sale, and upkeep of real property.

The first priority of the Facilities Division during the period covered by the collection was the development of NCSU's Centennial Campus, a process which began in 1984 when the university acquired 355 acres of land originally belonging to Dorothea Dix Hospital south of the main campus. Since that date, the campus has expanded to include 25 major buildings on 1,334 acres, representing some $620 million invested in facilities and infrastructure as of 2005.

During this period, the Facilities Division undertook myriad other projects and initiatives. These included, among many others, making the campus more accessible to disabled persons; renovation of Bragaw and Holladay Halls as well as Reynolds Coliseum; new construction on D. H. Hill Library; repairs to parking decks; and management of various outlying real properties.

Originally known as Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business, the office was renamed Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities in 1988, when Charles Leffler assumed the position.

Materials include blueprints, budget items, correspondence, memoranda, plans for projected construction and renovation of campus facilities, and photographs.

Although some files predate 1988, the vast majority of the documents in this collection--and all the correspondence--relates to Charles Leffler's tenure as Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities (1988-2004).

The General Files series gathers everything in the collection that can neither be classified as correspondence nor a special project. It is by a considerable margin the largest series in the collection and, like correspondence, it relates to the entire range of Facilities Division activities. Although the division between Series 2 (General Files) and 3 (Projects)--a distinction made originally by Leffler's office--seems arbitrary at times, as a rule Series 3 pertains to major construction projects already underway while Series 2 tends to address smaller or emerging concerns. Topics include campus accessibility, budget items, Centennial Campus growth, various construction and renovation projects, design issues, physical plant concerns, prospective real estate deals, and the actions of the University-Neighborhood Planning Council during the 1980s and 1990s.
