Charles M. Horton (1912 - 1987) was a furniture designer in Statesville, North Carolina. He graduated from Statesville High School and never studied furniture design in a formal setting. He began his career working with his brother and his father, Fred Horton. As his father's successor, he became a free-lance furniture designer in one of the most prosperous furniture manufacturing centers in the country. He designed individual pieces and suites for manufacturers throughout the Southeast. Among his clients were Lexington Chair Company and Burlington Furniture Company in North Carolina, Pulaski Furniture in Virginia, Trogdon Furniture in Georgia, and Williams Furniture Corporation in South Carolina. This collection contains Charles Wilson Suggs's notes, data, publications, papers presented, reports, photographs, and sketches, primarily on the topics of tobacco mechanization (tobacco harvesters and transplanters) and equipment ergonomics. Born in 1928, Suggs received his B.S.A.E. in 1949 and Ph.D. in 1959 from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University), where he then joined the faculty. Young, professor of entomology at North Carolina State University, contain mostly correspondence with other scientists and organizations about David Young’s research and information requests (some in German, Spanish and French). Also included are plans of graduate work for graduate students and a drawing of a Cicadellinae. Papers date from 1950 to 1983. David A. Young, Jr. (May 26, 1915 - June 8, 1991) was a professor of entomology at North Carolina State University. Young received a Ph.D. in entomology from the University of Kansas in 1950. He served as insect taxonomist at the United States National Museum in Washington, D.C., before joining the faculty at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1957. Young taught courses in insect morphology, taxonomy, and systematics. He was known for being a leafhopper specialist. Through trips to Peru, California, and Europe, Young added thousands of specimens to the North Carolina State University Insect Collection. Young officially retired from North Carolina State University in 1980, but continued as professor emeritus until 1986. He was a fellow at the Washington Academy of Science, as well as a member of numerous entomological societies. Less

The George Matsumoto Papers includes blueprints, specifications, sketches, correspondence, publications, scrapbooks, photographs, contracts, financial statements, and other related architectural records that document the extensive commercial and residential work of George Matsumoto and Associates. The bulk of the collection is composed of architectural records, such as drawings and sketches, that signify Matsumoto's architectural influences and his approach to project development over time. Included are materials that cover the various types of projects he took on, such as residential, collegiate, commercial, and community centers. The architectural records cover a wide expanse of projects primarily in North Carolina and California, with others in Virginia, Missouri, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. The architectural records, publications, honors and awards, and architectural model contained in the collection portray Matsumoto's career as an architect, businessman, and leader of modernist architecture in the 20th century. The materials range from 1930 to 2009, with the bulk from 1940 to 1979. A project index to the collection is available online. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. In 1961, George Matsumoto went on to join the faculty at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened his own firm. He stopped teaching in 1967 but continued his architecture work until 1991. In contrast to his residential work, Matsumoto's post-teaching work is mostly comprised of community centers and collegiate designs. Less

The James Fitzgibbon Papers includes architect and North Carolina State University School of Design professor James Fitzgibbon’s architectural drawings for the Ralph Fadum House of Raleigh, North Carolina, the George W. Paschal House, also of Raleigh, the Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Daniel House of Knoxville, Tennessee, and photographs and study models from his time working at Synergetics Inc. The collection includes color spot sketches of the exterior; site plans; working drawings; floor plans; shop drawings and blueprints and two undated drawings (1 sketch of interior elevation and 1 floor plan of 617 Kirby Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.); photographs by Joseph Molitor of the Fadum House; two models of the Globe Playhouse; photographs of study models and articles. James Walter Fitzgibbon (1915-1985) helped found the School of Design at North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in 1948. Fitzgibbon was hired as the associate architect for campus planning during the School of Design’s inception. He also served as a professor of architecture at North Carolina State College from 1948 to 1953. Fitzgibbon later served as president of Synergetics Inc., an association of Raleigh architects and engineers, before taking a position with Washington University in St. Louis. This collection documents Jehu Dewitt Paulson's career as an artist and educator and contains drawings, paintings, prints, plates, photographs and illustrations for published and unpublished manuscripts. The Personal files include Paulson's application for a Guggenheim Fellowship (1934), photographs of Paulson and his family, certificates of memberships to various societies and fraternities, a curriculum vitae, and notes from his college years. The North Carolina State College series includes class notes, a partial history of the Department of Architecture, course materials and notes on the appreciation of paintings. The Building Images subseries contains photographs, pencil sketches and plates of various campus buildings, including Memorial Tower, Primrose Hall, and Pullen Hall. Files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.) comprise another series. The Writings, Research and Inventions series contains identifications of paintings (by painter and subject), correspondence regarding the identification process, and published writings, including The Exterior Form of the Solitary Atom (1952), and unpublished manuscripts ("Appreciation of Painting," "Escape from Atlantis," and "People Makers, a Fantasy of Evolution"). Among the inventions are plans for an elevated storage tower and for an improved internal combustion rotary motor. Also included in this series are subject files of picture clippings on varied subjects (architecture, bridge building, interiors, landscaping, murals, paintings and sculpture, etc.). The Paintings, Sketches, Drawings, and Designs series comprise a good representation of Paulson's original artwork. This series also contains drawings and related papers on The Forms of the Elementary Atoms and The Periodic Law. The Photographic series contains undated photos of various atoms and elements. The Kenneth McCoy Scott collection contains project files, personal and professional papers, drawings and microfilms for buildings designed by Scott. Scott predominately designed residential and retail spaces, such as apartment complexes, shopping centers and motels. He also worked on educational and religious buildings. Project files include notes, correspondence, equipment catalogs, photographs, and contract information. The majority of the drawings are working drawings and shop drawings, although sketches, elevation site plans, and landscape plans are also included. Drawings may be on blue and brown paper, heavy translucent paper, sketch paper, and tracing paper. Several projects are also available on microfilm. Included in Scott's professional records are American Institute of Architecture records from the national and North Carolina chapters, and records from Scott's architectural firm. Personal papers include class notes from Scott's time as an architecture student, photographs, and personal correspondence. The North Carolina State University Entomology Department Drawings and Papers is principally a compilation of taxonomic illustrations of thousands of species of insects, 1967-1990. The illustrations are in a variety of media, mainly drawings and paintings, as well as photographs, negatives, and slides. They were produced by independent artists hired by the NC State University Entomology Department, members of the entomology faculty, and the United States Department of Agriculture. Most of the illustrations were executed for the Entomology Department in the 1970s by five primary artists. This collection also contains entomological publications, 1973-2000, primarily of the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Service (later Cooperative Extension Service), edited and authored by James R. Baker. These publications are mainly pest control manuals, as well as copies of a pest control informational serial. Also included is early professional correspondence of Baker regarding entomological publications and taxonomy, 1966-1975. The illustrations in the North Carolina State University Entomology Drawings and Papers, depicting thousands of species of insects and their taxonomy, were created or collected by the NC State University Entomology Department from 1967 to 1990. The Northup & O'Brien Architectural Records document the work of Northup & O'Brien, an architectural firm in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and its successors. The collection consists primarily of architectural drawings and job specifications, 1917-1980, as well as financial material, 1917-1956. The drawings represent the variety of projects undertaken by Northup & O'Brien in Winston-Salem as well other locations across the state, including residences, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches, and public and educational buildings. Most of the drawings are original, and characterize the different kinds of materials used for architectural drawing over the twentieth century. The firm of Northup & O'Brien was established in Winston-Salem by Willard Close Northup and Leet Alexander O'Brien in 1916. The partnership and its successor firms designed and constructed buildings in Winston-Salem and throughout North Carolina, as well as outside the state. In addition to residences--particularly fine homes--the partnership also specialized in commercial structures, schools, hospitals, churches, and municipal, county, and state government buildings. The Robert C. Browning Papers contains material from the professional engineering work of Robert C. Browning, and his father, R. Getty Browning. Robert C. Browning's materials contain project files, drawings, project photographs, engineering instruments related to his work as a consulting engineer. The project files are a sampling of Browning's engineering projects from the 1950s until the mid-1990s. His projects are mainly located at hospitals, colleges, and warehouse facilities. The types of documents found most often in Browning's project files are notes, sketches, working drawings, specifications, correspondence, budgeting and costs, engineering standards, and equipment catalogs. The equipment catalogs were put out by the manufacturers of machines and industrial equipment that Browning either installed or considered installing in project locations. Browning's collection also contains a box of personal information. This box includes diplomas, conferences attended, papers given, and Browning's resume at various points in his career. Also included is a profile of the Robert C. Browning Consulting Firm and a projects list. Engineering drawings in the Robert Browning Collection are shop drawings or blue prints. Some are drawn in the original pencil, others are copies. Copies of drawings often contain new revisions and added notes. The drawings illustrate plans for plumbing, electrical, lighting, structural, floor plans, exhaust, air conditioning, and heating. The Robert C. Browning Papers also include are materials from R. Getty Browning's work as Chief Locating Engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation (previously named Highway Commission). Included in the collection are project files, biographical papers, and artifacts. In the project files are materials relating to Getty Browning's work in the planning and construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway. These files contain correspondence, notes, maps, sketches, photographs and publicity materials. Biographical papers include newspaper clippings, photographs and publicity created by or about Getty Browning before and after his death. Also included are papers related to his work in the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The artifacts in the collection are engineering and surveying equipment used by Getty Browning. Robert C. Browning (1919-2007) and his father, R. Getty Browning (1884-1966), worked as engineers in North Carolina. Robert C. Browning earned a degree in consulting engineering from North Carolina State University in 1941. After serving in the Army as an engineer during World War II, Browning came back to the United States and started his own consulting engineering firm. As a consulting engineer, Robert C. Browning worked on the construction and renovations of schools, hospitals, industrial plants, and commercial buildings from 1953 until the mid-1990s. Projects at these locations included air conditioning, plumbing, heating, electrical, communications, storm drainage, water and sewer, grading, site planning, structural, central heating plants, steam distribution systems, highway right-of way acquisition, claims investigations, and highway location. R. Getty Browning worked as the Chief Locating Engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation from 1925 to 1958. He is best known for planning the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina starting in 1934. Less

The Ross Edward Shumaker Drawings consists of Ross Edward Shumaker's hand stenciled quote by Ralph Parlette, a drawing of a base for a flag pole, and a drawing of Eighth and Ninth dormitories for North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). Ross Edward Shumaker was hired as an associate professor of Architecture in the Department of Engineering at North Carolina State College in 1920. By 1921 Architectural Engineering became a separate curriculum under his direction. He also designed many of the buildings at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering. Less

Contains photographs, records of Baermann Associates architectural firm, client files, biographical materials relating to Baermann, files on the N.C. State University Program on Science and Society . The collection also contains artifacts, prints, sketches, drawings, and blueprints. Walter Peter Baermann was born on September 1, 1903 in southwest Germany. He earned an M.A. in architecture (1924), and a M.A. in mechanical engineering (1926), both from the Institute of Technology in Munich. In 1927, Baermann received a Ph.D. from the University of Munich. He moved to the United States in 1929, beginning his career with well-known designers such as Joseph Urban, Norman Bel Geddes, and Henry Dreyfuss. Baermann, by 1931, became the chief designer for Howe and Lescaze, an architectural firm with offices in New York and Philadelphia. During this period he spearheaded the design for the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society Building, one of the prototypes for the modern skyscraper. Less

The collection contains documents on the residence at 106 John Street, Louisburg, North Carolina, designed by G. Milton Small and originally owned by the Wheless Family. It includes construction and architectural contracts, land deeds, invoices (for furnishings, landscaping, and contractors), and drawings (plot plans, floor plans, construction plans, property and subdivision surveys), and photographs of the Wheless residence. Also included is 1 CD that contains 118 survey photographs taken by Laura A. W. Phillips for the National Register of Historic Places. In 1954, Thomas and Lois Wheless contracted with architect G. Milton Small to design a residence for them in Louisburg, North Carolina. The house is one story and has three bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths.
