The Dale E. Sayers papers document Sayers' career as a researcher and educator, from his work as an undergraduate at the University of California at Berkeley to his teaching and research career as a professor of physics at North Carolina State University. Sayers was a co-developer of the modern extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) technique, which, according to Sayers, "allows atomic structural information to be determined in complex systems." In addition to EXAFS, his research interests included x-ray absorption spectroscopy, amorphous materials, mammography technology, synchrotron radiation, and environmental science. Sayers' extensive planning work on the NC STAR Storage Ring Project (North Carolina Storage Rings for Advanced Research) is one of the main subjects documented here. Other research project files included in these papers are Joint Economic Development Initiative - Advanced Light Technologies (JEDI-ALT) and the Department of Defense's Technology Reinvestment Project (TRP). These research files also include information on Sayers involvement in projects with the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), the Advanced Light Source (ALS), the Canadian Light Source (CLS), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), and MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems). Sayers was active professionally in and beyond N.C. State. He published more than 200 articles in journals such as Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Applied Physics, Journal of Materials Research, Journal of Synchrotron Radiation, and Thin Solid Films. He was active in organizations such as International XAFS Society and the American Physical Society, was awarded a patent on his "Stable Silicide Electrical Contacts on Si" invention, presented invited talks and seminars at more than sixty national and international conferences, and served as a consultant for groups such as Mobil Research and Development. During his tenure at N.C. State, Sayers was involved in grant projects with institutions such as Exxon, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, Procter & Gamble, the United States Department of Agriculture, the United States Department of Energy, and the University of Connecticut. Included in this collection are papers from Sayers' colleague Rodney McCormick, also of the NC State Physics Department. Dale Edward Sayers began his studies at the University of California at Berkeley, where he received his bachelor's degree in physics. He continued his studies at the University of Washington, where he completed his master's and doctoral degrees in physics. Sayers was named assistant professor of physics at North Carolina State University in 1976, associate professor in 1979, and professor in 1984. Ernest L. Gooden (1903-1970) was born in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. Gooden graduated from Duke University, and taught at Glen Alpine High School in Glen Alpine, North Carolina, from 1927 to 1930. He joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture as an assistant scientific aide in September of 1930. Gooden had a 40-year career as a physicist with the USDA and specialized in pesticides. The Ernest L. Gooden Papers consists of materials documenting Gooden's career with the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service. Drafts and manuscripts of articles by Gooden include "Report of Physical Properties of Pesticides" and "Optical Crystallographic Properties of DDT." Research files contain notes, graphs, charts, and articles with labels like "Viscosity," "Zinc Arsenate," "Sodium Arsenite," and "Rotenone." This collection also contains electron microscope micrographs, patents and patent applications by Gooden, and hundreds of 3 x 5" x-ray diffraction data cards published by the Joint Committee on Chemical Analysis by X-Ray Diffraction Methods. These x-ray diffraction cards contain notes, calculations, and authors and their publications. Also included in this collection are glass slides, photos and negatives of electron microscope images, approximately a thousand 3 x 4" cards of chemical compounds and other notes, and materials from the annual meetings of the Electron Microscopy Society of America from 1949 to 1966. This collection contains notebooks created by James V. Pomeroy. Included are pattern samples, textile samples, and instructional illustrations from Pomeroy's time at the Philadelphia Textile School. While the materials span the time period 1898 to 1901, most documents date from 1899 to 1900. Topics covered include textiles, textile fabrics and machinery, carding, spinning, and weaving. James Voorhees Pomeroy entered into the Philadelphia Textile School (established 1884) in 1899 as part of the First Year Regular Day Class. Pomeroy received honorable mentions for the Silver Medal for General Excellence and for the Bronze Medal for Best Results in Color Harmony and Figured Design in 1899. In 1900, upon entering into the Second Year Day Class, Pomeroy was awarded the Prize Scholarship for the 1900-1901 school year. On June 6, 1901, he received his diploma from the textile school. He also earned the New England Cotton Manufacturers' Association Medal for General Excellence for Entire Course the same year. Less

The Jim E. Riviere papers contain research notebooks from experiments with the IPPSF (isolated perfused porcine skin flap), a novel in vitro alternative animal model for studies in cutaneous toxicology, dermatology, physiology, oncology, percutaneous drug absorption, and metabolism. Included as well are research notes from different projects and experiments involving pharmacology and toxicology, grant reports and study reports pertaining to Riviere's work with pharmacology and toxicology for North Carolina State University, the United States Department of Defense, the United States Army Medical Research Acquisition Agency, and several private corporations. The collection also contains copies of published articles, conference programs and computer-printed drafts of textbooks and textbook chapters written and co-written by Jim E. Riviere and his wife and co-researcher, Nancy A. Monteiro-Riviere, Lab Notebooks for IPPSF Department of Defense (including Laminin), and other Studies. As of January 2007, Jim E. Riviere was Burroughs Wellcome Fund Distinguished Professor of Pharmacology; Director, Center for Chemical Toxicology Research and Pharmacokinetics, College of Veterinary Medicine; and Director of the Biomathematics Program of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. His research interests relate to applying biomathematics to problems in toxicology, including the risk assessment of chemical mixtures, pharmacokinetics, absorption of drugs and chemicals across skin, and the food safety and pharmacokinetics of tissue residues in food producing animals. Ralph Clement Bryant (1913-1994) was the son of R. C. Bryant, the first person to receive a forestry degree in the United States. The younger Bryant received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Yale University and his Ph.D. from Duke University. He joined the North Carolina State University faculty in 1952 and in 1970 was recognized as an outstanding teacher of the year. The younger Bryant was a member of Sigma Xi, Xi Sigma Pi, Alpha Zeta, the Society of American Foresters, the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The Ralph Clement Bryant family papers consist of a notebook and typed pages related to coursework in silviculture. The notebook, dated 1899 and labeled "Forestry 3 -- Silviculture," belonged to R. C. Bryant, the father of Ralph Clement Bryant, who became Professor of Forestry at North Carolina State University. The typed pages consist of an outline of the subject of silviculture and a set of exam questions. These are undated and may have belonged to the son, Professor Ralph Clement Bryant. Less

Papers and audiovisual materials documenting Scott Chilton’s botanical research, teaching career, and personal life. This includes notebooks, research and laboratory data, articles, news clippings, collected works, Chilton’s own writings and publications, course materials, correspondence, legal documents, slides, photographs, and VHS video recordings. The collection’s contents date from between 1917 and 2004, but the bulk of the collection dates from after the mid-1960s. After completing his education and serving in the United States Navy, William Scott Chilton began teaching at the University of Washington. He moved to Washington University-St. Louis before beginning his employment in North Carolina State University's Botany Department in 1983. A natural products chemist, Chilton distinguished himself in research focused upon the phytochemistry, fungi, and plant-associate microbes, the structure of novel amino acids, and ethnobotanical uses of plants. He was well known for his research on a number of topics, including mushroom toxins, crown-gall metabolites, and the corn toxin DIMBOA. Chilton continued to teach and work in his phytochemistry lab after his retirement from NC State University in 2003. He died suddenly while hiking in August 2004. Less

The Walter Clyburn Taylor Papers consists of papers relating to textiles and their manufacture. These papers represent Taylor’s work for both his sophomore course on carding and spinning and for courses taken during his junior year at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). Included are handwritten and typewritten essays on a variety of subjects. Also present are tables of mechanical settings and several technical drawings for machinery, as well as articles clipped from technical journals and affixed onto pages of the notebook. All the materials in the notebook date from between 1911 and 1912. Born in 1889, Walter Clyburn Taylor attended the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and graduated in 1913 with a degree in Textile Engineering. He served in the military during World War I and was stationed in Europe for more than a year during the hostilities. After the war, he returned to North Carolina and worked in the textile industry. The William Wurth Kriegel Papers contain notebooks and reprints of articles related to Kriegel's research on ceramic engineering, circa 1939-1964. William Wurth Kriegel (1907-1980), a native of Seattle, Washington, joined the faculty of the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1939, after receiving his doctorate in ceramic engineering from the Technische Hochschule in Hanover, Germany. An authority on the mechanical properties of ceramic materials, he was head of the ceramic engineering program at N.C. State beginning in 1946, and retired in 1971. Less
