MoreThe Albert Alexander Banadyga check and newsclipping consists of a check created on Red Cross stationery by Banadyga when he was hospitalized in Denizes, England in 1944 to recuperate from a wound. The check was written to pay his alumni dues at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (now North Carolina State University). It was honored by his bank, First Citizens Bank and Trust Company, in Burgaw, N.C. The newsclipping contains an article about Banadyga's roommate Dudley Robbins. This 1997 article talks about Robbins's experiences as a Nazi prisoner of war in 1944. Albert Alexander Banadyga (1921 - 2000) began his professional career at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering in 1949 as the manager of the N.C. State College Experiment Station's vegetable test farm near Faison, N.C. In 1953, he became an extension horticultural specialist, placed in charge of the State College's horticultural work. In 1975, Banadyga received the Bittner Extension Award from the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS). The organization named him as a Fellow in 1978.

MoreThe Carey Hoyt Bostian papers and photographs contains correspondence, news clippings, and photographs relating to Bostian's tenure at North Carolina State University as Director of Instruction at the School of Agriculture and as Chancellor of the University. Also included are Bostian's speeches and correspondence relating to his chancellorship. Carey Hoyt Bostian served as a faculty member at North Carolina State College from 1930 to 1973. Bostian joined the faculty at North Carolina State College in 1930 as an assistant professor in zoology. He became an associate professor in 1936, and a full professor in 1946. Also in 1946, Bostian was appointed assistant director of instruction in the State College School of Agriculture. In 1948, he became the associate dean of the School of Agriculture, and became director of instruction in 1950. During this year, he also became a professor in the genetics department. His title changed to director of instruction, School of Agriculture, in 1952. On September 1, 1953, Bostian became the seventh chancellor of North Carolina State College, and was formally installed on February 22, 1954. In 1959, Bostian resigned as chancellor in order to return to teaching. He helped establish the Faculty Senate, and served as its chairman from 1962 to 1963. Bostian continued to teach genetics at North Carolina State until his retirement in 1973.

He began his career working with his brother and his father, Fred Horton. As his father's successor, he became a free-lance furniture designer in one of the most prosperous furniture manufacturing centers in the country. He designed individual pieces and suites for manufacturers throughout the Southeast. Among his clients were Lexington Chair Company and Burlington Furniture Company in North Carolina, Pulaski Furniture in Virginia, Trogdon Furniture in Georgia, and Williams Furniture Corporation in South Carolina.

MoreThe Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (1859 - 1924) Papers, 1883 - 1955, contain items relating to Hill's career at North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) as an English professor, Vice President, and President. Many of the materials document Hill's professional career, particularly his appointment to and resignation from the presidency of the College. There are also manuscript drafts of texts Hill wrote on the Civil War and on his father, General Daniel Harvey Hill. A small number of personal materials are also included. The bulk of the materials dates from 1908 to early 1920s. Daniel Harvey Hill Jr. (1859-1924) was an educator, college president, writer, and historian. He received a B.A., M.A. and Doctor of Literature degree from Davidson College. In 1908 he became the third president of the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, where he served from 1908 to 1916. The D. H. Hill Library on the NC State campus was named for him.

Also included in the collection are copies of poems written by Mr. Bridges while he was stationed in Greenville, South Carolina during World War I. A veteran of World War I, Earley W. Bridges was initiated into the Freemasons in 1930. From that point onwards, he was very active member of the Greensboro No. 76 Lodge. Bridges had a particular interest in Masonic history and served as the first curator of the Greensboro Masonic Museum. He also wrote a number of books and pamphlets about Freemasonry and its history, as well as several histories of specific lodges.

Frederick Morgan Haig served on the faculty of North Carolina State University for 42 years as a professor of dairy husbandry. Haig was a native of Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland, and served in World War I as an infantry lieutenant before joining the N.C. State faculty in 1919. Haig received an M.S. in animal husbandry from N.C. State in 1922. Haig died in 1968 at the age of seventy.

Also included in this collection are similar later reprints, reprints of Hepting's own articles, Hepting's resume, and a few other papers. George Henry Hepting (1907-1988) retired from the United States Forest Service as Chief Plant Pathologist at the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station in 1971. From 1967 through 1984 he served as Visiting Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and the School of Forest Resources at North Carolina State University. Hepting did research on heartrot diseases of forest trees; the impact of fire scars, basal wounds, and stump sprouts on infection and spread of decay in many species of trees; the mechanisms by which trees restrict the development of decay and discoloration in tree stems; fusarium wilt disease of Mimosa; the role of mating types in oak wilt fungus; fungal discolorations in felled timber and lumber of southern pines; the impact of discolorations and decay on the strength of wood veneers used in military aircraft; rust, twig, and foliage blights; pitch canker disease of southern pines; sweetgum blight; the ineffectiveness of actidione as a control for white pine blister rust; development of practical controls for annosus root rot and for management of nursery diseases with fumigant chemicals; cause of a serious dieback disease of pines in New Zealand; aspects of littleleaf disease of southern pines. He also directed pioneering research on the role of ozone and other photo-chemical oxidants as causes of diseases in forests.

Included are Deitrick's competition winning design for Needham Broughton High School (1928), his modernist Carolina County Club (1948), the prize winning Dorton Arena (with Matthew Nowicki, 1950 to 1951), and public housing pojects for the Raleigh Housing Authority. Crampton's designs include several buildings for Elon College (1965), the Wake Forest College Stadium (1966), numerous projects for the Wachovia Bank & Trust Co., and many public school buildings. The specifications are for buildings designed by Guy E. Crampton and Associates, including the Wake Forest College Stadium and public schools. William Henley Deitrick was born in Danville, Virginia, in 1895. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1916. Then he worked as a high school principal for a year in Georgia. During World War I, Deitrick served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army . After the war, he worked as a building contractor from 1919 to 1922. He entered Columbia University, New York in 1922 and studied architecture there until 1924. In 1926 he began practicing architecture. During his professional career Deitrick earned many distinctions. He sold his firm to associate Guy E. Crampton upon his retirement in 1959. Guy Edwin Crampton, Jr., was born in Washington, D.C. on 19 September 1913. From 1934 to 1940 he was a draftsman in the Supervising Architect's Office of the Federal Works Agency. He graduated from George Washington University with a bachelor of architecture in 1939. Between 1940 and 1949 Crampton worked for several different architectural firms. In 1950 he became an associate of William Henley Deitrick and Associates. In 1959 the firm changed its name to Guy E. Crampton and Associates with Crampton as a general partner. Crampton retired in 1976.

Included are documents on the National Association of Physical Plant Administrators (NAPPA), including the program to the 1965 conference held in Raleigh at North Carolina State University. A few materials from his student days also exist in this collection. J. McCree Smith was born in State Road, North Carolina, on May 1, 1917. He graduated from North Carolina State College (later North Carolina State University) in May 1942 with a bachelors degree in civil engineering. After military service and private practice, in March 1949 he returned to work at North Carolina State College, where he eventually became director of physical plant and university engineer in January 1953. In 1965 he was president of the Association of Physical Plant Administrators of University and Colleges. He retired from NC State University in 1975, and he passed away on December 11, 1988.

Hunt Papers, 1945, 1953-2018 include videotapes, films, compact discs, audiotapes, photographs, correspondence, speeches, news clippings, ad slicks, position papers, advertisement scripts, cue sheets, stickers, buttons, artifacts, and brochures relating to the personal life and political campaigns of James Baxter Hunt Jr., who was a Democratic lieutenant governor, 1973-1976, and four-term governor of North Carolina, 1977-1985 and 1993-2001. The largest portion of the collection is manuscripts, which feature debates, speeches, correspondences, advertisements and personal notes. The bulk of the materials include Hunt’s 1976 and 1980 gubernatorial campaigns, his unsuccessful 1984 bid to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United State Senator from North Carolina, and his 1992 and 1996 gubernatorial campaigns. Also included are materials documenting Hunt’s acts post-governorship, including the establishment of the Smart Start program, the Institute for Emerging Issues, and The Hunt Institute. Not included are any materials specifically documenting Hunt’s official acts as governor. James Baxter Hunt, Jr. (1937- ) was the Democratic governor of North Carolina from 1977 to 1985 and 1993 to 2001. After serving as Lieutenant Governor from 1973 to 1977, he served two terms as Governor, from 1977 to 1981 and 1981 to 1985. In 1984 he waged an unsuccessful campaign to unseat Republican Jesse Helms as United States Senator from North Carolina. The closely contested race, which Helms eventually won with 52% of the vote, garnered national attention as both sides engaged in negative campaigning. The campaign ultimately cost a combined $22 million, making it the most expensive Senate race in American history to that point. Hunt returned to elected office in 1993, winning a third term as Governor by defeating Republican Lieutenant Governor James C. Gardner. In 1996, he was elected to a fourth term over Republican state Representative Robin Hayes. Hunt left the office of the governor in 2001.
