Dr. Andries van Foreest was the founding member of the European Veterinary Dental Society (EVDS) in 1992 in Rome. He was also a Charter Full Member of the Society for Marine Mammalogy. Van Foreest was president of the European Association for Aquatic Mammals from 1982 to 1983. He died in February 2015. Michael K. Stoskopf, collector of these materials, is, as of 2020, directing the Environmental Medicine Consortium at N.C. State University and participates actively in the inter-college Fisheries and Wildlife and Marine Sciences programs. He is professor of wildlife and aquatic health in the College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences, with appointments in Forestry, Biomedical Engineering, and Toxicology. This collection is an oral history conducted by Kristina Baltutis of Dr. Lee Simmons at the Omaha Zoo. Dr. Lee G. Simmons received his DVM from Oklahoma State University in 1963. His first position at a zoo was curator of mammals at the Columbus Ohio Zoo in 1963. He later became staff veterinarian and assistant director. His next appointment, in 1966, was as the veterinarian at the Omaha Zoo. Dr. Simmons later became assistant director and then, in 1970, the zoo director. After his retirement as director he served as the chairman of the board for the Omaha Zoo Foundation. Dr. Lee Simmons is Director Emeritus of the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium in Omaha, Nebraska. Kristina Baltutis, DVM, is a graduate of NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine. At the time of the interview she was a student at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Less

The James Edgar Smallwood Papers primarily consist of teaching materials (articles, drawings and diagrams, handwritten notes, and syllabi) and related items, such as slides, X-rays, and audiovisual materials, that Dr. Smallwood used during his long tenure as a faculty member at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University. Also included are materials related to Smallwood's participation in professional organizations, including the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association, the American Association of Veterinary Anatomists, and the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. James Edgar (Ed) Smallwood was a Professor of Gross Anatomy in the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University. He earned a M.S. in Veterinary Anatomy at Texas A & M University in 1972 and his D.V.M. at Texas A & M University in 1969. Dr. Smallwood also served as the Senior Executive Director of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Society. He was also a member of the American Association of Veterinary Anatomists (1972 - present, President, 1988-1989); the World Association of Veterinary Anatomists (1977 - present; President, 1995-1999); the American Veterinary Medical Association (1969 - present); and the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (1981 - present). The Laurel A. Degernes Papers, 1970-2016, contain a wide variety of materials, including correspondence, photographs, conference materials, patient charts, radiographs, manuscripts, course materials, conference handbooks, presentation notes, newspaper clippings, magazines, CDs, DVDs and VHS tapes. The collection provides information about Degernes’ work as a staff veterinarian at the Raptor Center at University of Minnesota, St. Paul, her involvement in the Trumpeter Swan reintroduction program, and her work as a professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University. The collection also includes materials relating to Degernes' participation in various professional organizations and conferences, her contributions to avian medicine and surgery scholarship, and her work as a consultant in parrot, raptor, and waterfowl medicine. Dr. Laurel “Laurie” Ann Degernes was a professor of avian medicine at North Carolina State University from 1992 to 2016. She holds a B.A. in Biology (1976), a B.S. in Veterinary Sciences (1979), and D.V.M. (1981) from the University of Minnesota, St. Paul. In 1992, Degernes interned at The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul, and eventually served as a staff veterinarian there from 1986 to 1990. During this time, Degernes gained national attention for her work treating and rehabilitating lead-poisoned trumpeter swans through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ Trumpeter Swan reintroduction program. Degernes later moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, to complete her residency training in exotic and wild bird medicine at the College of Veterinary Medicine at North Carolina State University. After her residency, she became a faculty member at NC State. During a sabbatical leave in 2005, Degernes earned a M.P.H. in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon her retirement in 2016, Degernes established the Dr. Laurie Degernes Fellowship for Avian Medicine Education. Less

This collection contains Leo Lieberman's personal papers from 1921 to 2005. It contains correspondence, personal records, video cassettes and slides, Veterinary Medicine Journals and Publications, and administrative records. The majority of these records were produced in the 1970s up until the 1990s. Leo Lieberman (1915-2006) was a long time resident of Waterford Massachusetts where he practiced veterinary medicine for more than 30 years. He graduated from the Ohio State University Veterinary Medicine school in 1935. He then served in World War II starting in 1941 in the Veterinary Corps. He was an active member of the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association and served as president of the association. Dr. Lieberman is well known for his publications on the problem of pet overpopulation and early neutering. Less

This collection contains an almanac published by the Merchant's Gargling Oil Company in 1876, and a reprint of an 1894 advertisement poster for Merchant's Gargling Oil with the slogan: "A Liniment for Man or Beast". The almanac has a note from John Hodge, then Secretary and later President of the Merchant's Gargling Oil Company, as well as an ad for Merchant's Worm Tablets. Also included in the almanac are directions for taking Gargling Oil for different ailments, notes on the moon phases, recipes and household tips, customer testimonials, and humorous short stories of two or three lines. George Washington Merchant, the town druggist for Lockport, NY, first produced Merchant's Gargling Oil in 1833. The first Gargling Oil was marketed as a catch-all salve that could cure all possible illness of domestic animals. Despite its name, Merchant's Gargling Oil was intended for external use and used to treat skin ailments and surface wounds on horses, cattle, sheep, and poultry. A version for human use was introduced in 1875. Humans could use the Gargling Oil externally or interally to treat a variety of conditions including burns, rheumatism, lame back, chapped hands, sore throat, and stomach cramps, among others. To take the Gargling Oil internally, the advised dose was to combine fifteen to twenty drops of the oil with sugar, or mixed with syrup, and to take a dose every three to six hours. The product for animals was packaged in a yellow wrapper, and the one for humans had a white wrapper. The company said that, in an emergency, humans could use the version for animals though it would temporarily stain their skin. Less

It also contains North Carolina Zoological Park Anesthesia Records, zoological reports and publications, correspondence, and documents relating to the American College of Zoological Medicine. Material in halfbox 9 is restricted. Dr. Michael Loomis served 30 years as the Chief Veterinarian at the North Carolina Zoo; he retired in January 2016. As Chief Veterinarian, Loomis oversaw the division that provides all veterinary medical care for the Zoo’s animal collections. Dr. Loomis received his Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of California, Davis, and received his master's degree in zoology from Indiana University. Dr. Loomis is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Zoological Medicine at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine (as of 2018). Less

The Mitchell Bush Papers contain research and teaching notes, presentations and materials, journals and publications, correspondence, field studies, field notes, research projects, training materials, anesthesia records, digital media such as floppy disks, CD-ROMS, zip disks, film strips, videotapes and 35mm slides documenting medical studies, surgeries and wildlife in national and international settings. Many of the files relate to Mitchell Bush's work with the National Zoological Park through the Smithsonian Institution. There are also separate series about his work with giraffes and his work with pandas. Almost the entire collection is related to Bush's work as a zoo veterinarian. Although the collection has been divided into series to assist with the research process, some topics may be covered across multiple series. For example, there is a series about the work that Bush did with pandas, but pandas may also appear in other series such as in the Subject Files or the Professional Organizations series. The majority of the materials in the collections date from 1950 to 2012. A few earlier items or reprints of earlier items are also included. Mitchell (Mitch) Bush is a leader in the field of modern zoological medicine. He graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis, in 1965, and his career has been focused on pioneering studies and clinical practice in zoological and comparative medicine. He has worked for the National Zoological Park at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., since 1972, and beginning in 1994 he has served as the Chief of Veterinary Services at the Smithsonian Conservation & Research Center. He holds a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Comparative Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical School and is a visiting scientist at Kruger National Park in South Africa. Less

Nancy Ann Monteiro-Riviere is a Professor of Investigative Dermatology and Toxicology in the Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University. She holds an M.A. from Stonehill College and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University. She also did postdoctoral work at the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology (CIIT) Centers for Health Research in Research Triangle Park.Her research has focused on the toxicity of environmental and novel pharmaceutical compounds, including toxicity of nanomaterials and cell uptake pathways and biodistribution studies. She has edited Skin Toxicology- Target Organ Series for Toxicology and Nanotoxicology: Characterization, Dosing and Health Effects (2007). Less

This collection contains 1 thermometer filled with red liquid. The thermometer is 16 x 1 cm, and has a temperature range of -30 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Also included in this collection is a cylindrical case for the thermometer, measuring 18 x 2 cm. The exterior of the case includes the company name, Taylor Instrument Companies, and the item number: no. 6110. Presented by Betty Doyle. Ms. Doyle obtained the thermometer from her father, Paul Greene, who was a herdsman caring for Guernsey cattle. The thermometer was used on Brookberry Farm, Forsythe County, North Carolina from the 1940s until 1970, when all the cows were sold. The farm was owned by Bowman Gray, Jr. Less

There are some items from the 1970s and several items of correspondence from 1999. Topics include care of animals such as dogs, horses, and cows. Many publications are about diseases of these animals. The William Lance Collection of M-series Drug Records contains reports, correspondence with the Federal Drug Administration, agreements, New Animal Drug Applications, and films relating to the development and testing of the M-99 drug and its antidotes, M50-50 and M-285. Records range in date from 1964 to 1971. The M-series were revolutionary drugs in zoological health. The drugs are an analgesic which can cause catatonia at very low doseages; they are used for immobilising game animals. The M-series of drugs is composed of M-99, or etorphine, as well as M-99's antidotes, M50-50 and M-285. The drugs were developed in partnership between American Cyanamid Company of Pearl River, New York and Reckitt & Sons, Ltd. of Hull, England. Reckitt & Sons Ltd. conducted many laboratory tests of the drugs which helped to inform American Cyanamid Company's application to the New Animal Drug department of the FDA. Lederle Laboratories located in Pearl River, New York manufactured the drugs for export. William Lance's company, Wildlife Pharmaceuticals, acquired the records and the rights to the M-series drugs after its formation in 1981. Less
