MoreThese records document the architectural projects of Ballard, McCredie Associates from its beginning in 1955 until its dissolution in 1998. They consist primarily of architectural drawings, project files, photographs and slides. The commissions include primary and secondary schools, churches, banks, state and federal research laboratories and offices, and university buildings. The records survey 70 selected projects of the approximately 320 projects designed and constructed by the firm. In 1955, architect Jesse M. Page founded an architectural firm in Raleigh, North Carolina under the name Jesse M. Page & Associates. From its beginning, the small firm was involved in the design and construction of many educational and institutional facilities. Their numerous educational projects include primary and secondary schools throughout central and eastern North Carolina, often reflecting the different goals and needs required of rural and urban schools. Ballard, McCredie Associates also worked on many projects reflecting the rapid pace and change of scientific research during the late twentieth century. Their commissions parallel this change with the needs of educational and federal institutions to keep pace with new technologies. Restoration commissions were also part of their work. The firm was dissolved in 1998.

MoreThe Doris J. Stanley and William Van Eaton Sprinkle Architectural Drawings contain floorplans and elevations for numerous residences, some businesses, and one funeral home. Items in the collection are described using titles found on the original drawings. Also included are project files and specifications. Doris J. Stanley was born in Farmington, Maine, in 1926. She worked for two years in newspaper advertising for the Bangor Daily Commercial before coming to Durham, North Carolina, in 1950 with a friend who was attending graduate school. In Durham, she took a drafting job with architect William Van Eaton Sprinkle. Sprinkle did his initial drawings at 1/8” scale, then handed them over to Stanley to recreate them at 1/4”. All the sketches and drafting in Sprinkle's office were completed by Stanley. After Sprinkle's death in 1965, Stanley continued to operate his architectural firm. Stanley retired in 1989.

MoreThe G. Milton Small Papers contain architectural drawings and photographs of projects and structures designed by architect G. Milton Small between 1950 and 1981. The collection primarily consists of architectural drawings of Small's designs, many of which were constructed on the North Carolina State University campus and elsewhere in the Raleigh, North Carolina, region. The collection also contains photographs taken by architectural photographers Joseph Molitor and Holland Wright, as well as Small's writings on computerized parking systems. Two additional series were added in 2015, which include project files and specifications for some projects as well as catalogs and related materials from architectural firms. A project index to the collection is available online. G. Milton Small Jr. (1916-1992) was a student of Mies van der Rohe and was one of the foremost modernist architects working in the southeastern United States in the later half of the 20th century. Small was born in Collinsville, Oklahoma. He graduated with a bachelors degree from the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and a masters from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, where he studied under Mies van der Rohe. In Chicago he worked for the firms Perkins and Will, and Hudgins Thompson and Ball. Small relocated to North Carolina in 1948 to head the architectural office of William Henley Deitrick, at that time Raleigh's largest architectural firm and the most committed to modernist design. Small was recommended for the position by a former professor at the University of Oklahoma, Henry Kamphoefner, who was himself relocating to Raleigh to take over the deanship of North Carolina State University's new School of Design. Small headed Deitrick's office for two years, during which time he produced several important modernist designs, principally, a new clubhouse for the Carolina Country Club, which was the subject of a Life magazine article, "New Country Club" (31 July 1950. p. 70). Small started his own practice, G. Milton Small Architects, in 1949. His first design was a residence which was constructed in 1950 for Raleigh businessman Robert I. Rothstein.

The bulk of the collection is composed of architectural records, such as drawings and sketches, that signify Matsumoto's architectural influences and his approach to project development over time. Included are materials that cover the various types of projects he took on, such as residential, collegiate, commercial, and community centers. The architectural records cover a wide expanse of projects primarily in North Carolina and California, with others in Virginia, Missouri, New York, Florida, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Illinois. The architectural records, publications, honors and awards, and architectural model contained in the collection portray Matsumoto's career as an architect, businessman, and leader of modernist architecture in the 20th century. The materials range from 1930 to 2009, with the bulk from 1940 to 1979. A project index to the collection is available online. George Matsumoto (1922-2016) was a Japanese American architect and educator who is most known for his award-winning, modernist designs. In 1948, Matsumoto became a faculty member at the School (later College) of Design of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University). During his tenure at the School of Design, Matsumoto won more than thirty awards for his residential work, and his achievements in design were widely published. In 1961, George Matsumoto went on to join the faculty at the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, and opened his own firm. He stopped teaching in 1967 but continued his architecture work until 1991. In contrast to his residential work, Matsumoto's post-teaching work is mostly comprised of community centers and collegiate designs.

The collection consists primarily of Schenck’s photographs, including negatives and prints of various sizes, slides, and transparencies. Also included in the collection are magazines, catalogs, and clippings containing examples of Schenck’s work and his client file notes. Schenck’s subjects include residences, schools, malls, banks, historic structures, university campuses, churches, business campuses, and civic centers. Geographically, the photographs were taken across the Southern United States, with a particular focus on North and South Carolina, specifically the Charlotte-metro area. Gordon H. Schenck, Jr. (1927-2009) was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. He earned a degree in engineering from North Carolina State University. After college, he worked as a Southern Railway engineer for thirteen years. In 1963, Schenck began his eponymous photography company. He worked for many mid-century architects in North Carolina, photographing both model projects and completed structures. Schenck also worked for companies, including Belk and Southern Bell, and did some commercial work, photographing both models and posed products. Schenck’s work appeared in magazines such as Progressive Architecture, Better Homes and Gardens, and Southern Living. His photographs of historic buildings are also included in the Historic American Building Survey. In 1984, Schenck earned a degree in Photographic Craftsmanship from the Professional Photographers of America. He was a member of the American Society of Media Photographers and the American Photographic Artists. His work was the subject of a traveling retrospective exhibit, “By Assignment and By the Way: Gordon Schenck Photographs Architecture, 1963-2008.” Schenck died in January 2009.

Drawings include floor plans, elevations, and details for a variety of projects, such as houses, schools, university classroom and research facilities, dormitories, churches, correctional facilities, hospitals, churches, and office buildings primarily located in North Carolina. Most materials date from 1947 to 1987. Earlier drawings, dating from 1934, by other architects are also included. Project files primarily focus on the most prominent buildings the firm designed including the North Carolina Museum of Art, North Carolina State Legislative Building, and North Carolina State University’s Harrelson Hall. Holloway-Reeves was an architectural firm based in Raleigh, North Carolina. The partners, John S. Holloway (1923-2005) and Ralph "Bernie" Reeves, Jr. (1920-1984), both studied architecture at North Carolina State College. The firm began in 1948 with William Weber as the third partner. In 1951 the firm was established as Holloway-Reeves. It eventually became one of the largest architectural firms in North Carolina. Projects included numerous school, university, and state government buildings, as well as churches, residences, camps, and hospitals. Collaborations with New York architect Edward Durell Stone resulted in designs for the North Carolina State Legislative Building and the North Carolina Museum of Art. The firm also worked with Edward “Terry” Waugh to design North Carolina State University’s Harrelson Hall, the first circular classroom structure ever built on a university campus. John Holloway retired in 1986. Since 1990, the firm has operated under the name H. R. Associates, PA.

Educational institution plans make up a significant portion of the project files in this collection, representing schools from the elementary through university levels. The firm's architectural projects also include churches, banks, residences, offices, libraries, and retail establishments. The vast majority of these buildings are located in North Carolina, especially in the eastern part of the state, though a small number of South Carolina projects are included as well. These project files include correspondence, inspection reports, drawings, blueprints, project specifications, photographs, contracts, and bid data and forms. Personal papers of Leslie N. Boney Sr., make up a small part of this collection, and include copies of textiles, chemistry, and English exams dating from 1901 to 1903, belonging to Leslie N. Boney Sr., C. L. Creech, and O. Max Gardner. A copy of Boney Sr.'s account of the 1901 fire that destroyed NC State University's original Watauga Hall, as printed in the 1903 Agromeck, is also included. North Carolina native Leslie N. Boney Sr. (1880-1964) graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University) in 1903 with a degree in textile engineering. Boney joined Wilmington architect James F. Gause as a partner in practice in 1918, then took over the practice in 1922, upon Gause's retirement. Boney's eldest son, Leslie N. Boney Jr. (1920-2003), joined his father's practice after graduating from the College of Engineering at North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering (later North Carolina State University) in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering. Boney Jr. served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, earning the rank of major, and returned to his family's architectural practice following the war. Boney Jr. was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, served as president of North Carolina's chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was a recipient of North Carolina State University's prestigious Watauga Medal in 1996.

Notable projects documented in the collection include residences on Figure Eight Island, such as the Jones, Mahan, Bell, Hughes, Ellison, and Monroe houses; as well as the NC State University Student Center annex; Lower Cape Fear Hospice, St. John’s Museum of Art, and Flynn's own office at 15 S. Second St. in Wilmington, N.C. The collection also includes the notebooks of Ligon Flynn’s associate, Harold Garriss, whose seven 120-sheet spiral notebooks cover the years 1981 to 1993. Ligon Flynn (1931-2010) was born near Tryon, North Carolina. He graduated from the School of Design at what was then North Carolina State College in 1959 and taught at the School of Design from 1963 to 1967 while also in private practice. In 1969, he founded the firm of Ligon B. Flynn, Architect, in Raleigh. The firm moved to Wilmington, North Carolina in 1972. Flynn’s firm mainly designed private residences, including a number of houses on Figure Eight Island. He also worked on public buildings, including the in-patient facility for the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center and a number of projects at North Carolina State University. Flynn won six design awards from the North Carolina chapter of the American Institute of Architects. In 1993, he received the Kamphoefner Prize from the N.C. Architecture Foundation. In 2007, he authored a book of photographs titled Tobacco Barns. He retired in 2009.

Writings by Nowicki include a speech and several articles on architectural design. Documents written about Nowicki include newspaper and magazine articles, mostly composed after his death, and several biographical compilations of Nowicki's work. Along with Nowicki's drawings and sketches for the North Carolina State Fairgrounds and Dorton Arena, there are preliminary drawings that were done for Mayer and Whittlesey in 1950, drawings for the city of Chandigarh in Punjab, India, and a three-dimensional model of Dorton Arena. Dimensions vary with each drawing and sketch. The smallest are approximately 18 x 26 inches, the largest approximately 26 x 30 inches. Matthew Nowicki (1910-1950), born Maciej Nowicki, was a professor of Architecture and served as the acting Head of the Department of Architecture at North Carolina State College (1948-1950). He studied at the Chicago Art Institute (1922), the School of Design of Gerson-Warsaw (1925-1926), the School of Mehofer-Cracow (1927), and the Polytechnic of Warsaw (1925-1926). Nowicki was born in Chita, Russia and later married artist Stanislawa Sandeck. He designed the interiors of the Carolina Country Club in Raleigh and was a design consultant to William H. Deitrick for Dorton Arena. He also consulted on a State Archives and Museum building (unbuilt) and was a member of the design team for the headquarters of the United Nations. He died in a plane crash over Egypt in 1950 while flying back to the United States from India.

State University Program on Science and Society . The collection also contains artifacts, prints, sketches, drawings, and blueprints. Walter Peter Baermann was born on September 1, 1903 in southwest Germany. He earned an M.A. in architecture (1924), and a M.A. in mechanical engineering (1926), both from the Institute of Technology in Munich. In 1927, Baermann received a Ph.D. from the University of Munich. He moved to the United States in 1929, beginning his career with well-known designers such as Joseph Urban, Norman Bel Geddes, and Henry Dreyfuss. Baermann, by 1931, became the chief designer for Howe and Lescaze, an architectural firm with offices in New York and Philadelphia. During this period he spearheaded the design for the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society Building, one of the prototypes for the modern skyscraper.

MoreThe William Roy Wallace Architectural Papers, circa 1913- circa 2000, contain architectural drawings and project files that document the work of Wallace and his associates. Included are plans for homes for many Winston-Salem tobacco and textiles scions from the 1930s to 1980s as well as for their counterparts in Burlington, Greensboro, High Point and Boone. Also included are designs created for various religious, educational, and commercial clients throughout the state. Drawings from Charles Barton Keen, Wallace’s mentor and a prolific designer of homes for the Philadelphia elite, who was also a favorite architect of wealthy tobacco and textile families in North Carolina, are also included here. Also included in this collection are drawings by Wallace's son, William Roy Wallace, Jr., and it is not always clear which Wallace was the architect for a particular drawing. A project index to the collection is available online. William Roy Wallace (1889-1983), a native of Pennsylvania, began his career in association with Philadelphia architect Charles Barton Keen (1868-1931), a designer of country houses for the Philadelphia elite. Keen created a second major body of work among the leading industrial families in the North Carolina Piedmont, including the famed Reynolda House (1912-1918) for the Reynolds family in Winston-Salem. Wallace worked with Keen as an office boy, a draftsman, and eventually as partner. In 1923 Keen and Wallace moved to Winston-Salem to manage the construction of the R. J. Reynolds High School and Auditorium. After Keen returned to Philadelphia, Wallace oversaw the Winston-Salem office and traveled back and forth from Philadelphia to supervise the firm’s many projects. Throughout the 1920s, the two architects worked on many of the great homes in Reynolda Park and Stratford Road in Winston-Salem, including the C. A. Kent House, the Robert Hanes House, and the P. Huber Hanes Sr. House. In 1928 Wallace settled permanently in Winston-Salem, where he established a practice with Harold Macklin and James M. Conrad. Like Keen, Wallace and his son William Roy Wallace, Jr., who joined the practice after World War II, continued in a Beaux Arts revivalist tradition that shaped the architectural heritage of Winston-Salem and other communities.
