The Sanford R. Winston Collection primarily contains documents from the 1930s and 1940s, when Winston was head of the Department
of Sociology at North Carolina State College. The collection includes correspondence, speeches, and writings related to Winston's
interests in rural sociology, African-American issues, and leadership. Materials about his career activities and the organizations
to which he belonged are included in the collection, as well as planning documents and descriptions of the S.R. Winston Music
Collection, which was established following Winston's death.

The Ellen Black Winston Papers contains correspondence, clippings, photographs, postcards, and other materials documenting
Winston's life and career. The collection contains correspondence and clippings about Winston's service as Commissioner of
Public Welfare in North Carolina and as U.S. Commissioner of Welfare. It also features genealogical information, family correspondence,
and sympathy correspondence following the death of Winston's husband, Sanford. During their marriage, the Winstons collected
hundreds of postcards from across the United States and around the world, which are also included in this collection.
