Title:   Stanley Backer Papers, 1948-2000

Abstract: Stanley Backer (1920-2003) attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning degrees in engineering and textile technology. He joined the faculty at M.I.T. in 1951 and eventually became the head of the Fibers and Polymers Laboratory. His research in textiles engineering led to a greater understanding of fiber structure and fabric behavior. Backer also led a program to develop one of the first online information retrieval systems, known as the Textile Information Retrieval Product. He died in 2003.

Abstract: Treatise on textile manufacturing by Spanish engineer Albert Blanxart. In it, he explained and illustrated the processes for manufacturing various styles and colors of fabrics, all of which are illustrated with original cloth swatches. There are 77 handwritten pages with diagrams and 24 additional leaves with original textile samples and diagrams. The text is written in Spanish.

Title:   Arthur Wullschleger Notebook, 1898-1902

Abstract: Large volume containing handwritten notes on courses in weaving, as well as hand-drawn diagrams of textile machinery and weaving patterns. Fabric samples accompany some weaving patterns. On the cover is written Arthur Wullschleger 1902. At head of title page is written, Ecole Societé d'Enseignement Professionel du Rhône. Then three titles are given: Cours Théorie de Tissage, Cours de Tissage pratique, and Cours de Garage de Mr. Loir. At the end of the title page is written Arthur Wullschleger, d'Aarbourg, Suisse, Lyon, 1898-1902.

Abstract: The FabriCAD Collection documents the activities of FabriCAD Consulting, a company established by Alison Grudier Hardy in the 1990s to provide consulting services to companies in the fashion and textile industries interested in using Computer Aided Design (CAD). Materials in the collection include information on various CAD systems, articles about FabriCAD, CAD systems, the textile industry, company publications, and fabric samples of CAD printing. In January 2003 Hardy discontinued the company's operations.

Abstract: The majority of the collection consists of notebooks and textbooks of Ralph Robertson Powell's when he was a student in the North Carolina State College School of Textiles (later North Carolina State University College of Textiles) from 1932 to 1936. A fabric analysis workbook, and note pages on fabric structure, dyeing, and other textiles subjects are included. Also included are materials relating to Powell's involvement in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and a loom machine manual authored by Powell and published by Cannon Mills in 1955.

Abstract: This records subgroup contains correspondence among North Carolina State University College of Textiles faculty, staff, and administrators and other files relating to the operations of the school; budget material, and Textile Extension correspondence. Documentation in the academic series includes information regarding Textiles College and extension projects and research, and Textiles College brochures and catalogs. Budget material includes monthly and year-to-date budget and expenditure reports of the College, the North Carolina Textiles Foundation, as well as other personnel and financial aid paperwork. The Textiles Extension correspondence series consists of correspondence to and from textile industry representatives regarding applied research requests and information on instructional services provided by the College of Textiles. This subgroup was formerly numbered UA 130.5.
